Not at all. You only need to have the first year with a lower number. A lot of the contracts tend to have a lower first year salary anyways due to bonus money being paid early, even from Shanny and Allen. Look at Garcons contract. 2.1 mil base salary last year with a cap hit of 4.7 mil, 5.6 mil base salary this year with a cap hit of 8.2 mil. Most teams do it that way. They escalate the annual salary so that if they cut the player before they finish the contract, they are paying out less than if they had the annual salary stayed the same through every year.
