Once you have 4 years of service in the NFL, there is no waiver wire. Waivers are only for younger players. He is whats called a vested veteran, meaning he is outright cut and doesnt deal with waivers. He is a free agent.

Editing to add: A vested veteran only deals with waivers if he is cut after the trade deadline. It doesnt apply to this situation, but I cant honestly say they never deal with waivers.

Didnt know that but still not going to concede anything to you. There was still a good chance if the seahawks trading him before releasing him. So there you go. Ha!

It was reported by NFL.com that he was cut early today, around noon or even earlier. Some reports had him being cut at 8 or 9 am. They wouldnt announce they are cutting him this morning if they thought they could trade him near the deadline.

From what I read, he got a 500k signing bonus, and has another 500k guaranteed unless he plays somewhere else. I personally think he knew he wouldnt be able to sign for anything other than the vet minimum and figured the 500k for not playing was better than only getting an additional 300-400k above that if he does play.

From a business standpoint, getting that much for nothing might make sense. But from a competitor's standpoint, I can't see that happening. Winfield all of a sudden felt like he can't play anymore? Unless he's hurt I don't believe it until he officially retires.

Keep in mind, he is 36. Im sure he realizes that there are no more big contracts in his future if he keeps playing and no guarantees of a ring.
