Trying to be honest. Orakpo was there but it looked like he was being held most of the first half and the refs were not calling it. The refs finally started calling it late second quarter and second half.

I'll give the Eagles credit. This is exactly what I was afraid would happen. while all my friends were talking Super Bowl I stayed reserved.

I don't know what I would have done differently not knowing what the Eagles were going to do. I might have started Cousins and tried to see how he did against the Eagles defense, BUT.... this game is also all about money. People came to the game to see RG3. The reason our first game was Mon. night was so all the league could see RG3. People and media would have been upset if the team put Cousin in to start.

but keep in mind his timing might have been better with Morris and the WR's. If it looked like a cluster then I would have put RG3 in just to try and make something happen. But that's why I'm not a HC.

In defense of the eagles o-line, all linemen hold, it is the good defensive players that adjust and counter to make the plays. I also disagree with the Cousins scenario, personally I don't care who is under center as long as the Skins win. I look at this game as Roberts preseason game. We knew and the coaches knew he would be rusty. I am not going to go so far as to argue they were giving this game away to get Robert game time conditioning. If the adjustments made in the second half are any indication, we will see a better offense with less turnovers in the first half against GB.

People keep hounding the defense, but here is something to note. Shortly into the third quarter, the time of possession was 22 minutes (philly) compared to our measly 9 mins. Another useful stat is our third down conversion, which was a horrible 2-10 along with the 3 turnovers. I'm sorry, but you can't keep putting the defense in absolute horrible situations for that long and not expect them to break. No defense is going to hold up to that. Well, none that aren't the mid 2000's Ravens or Bucs. Notice how when our offense started clicking, our defense started to hold their offense down. That said, there is absolutely NO excuse for all those missed tackles. That's basic football right there and something taught at the pee wee level. Our LBs are still horrible in coverage as well.


Sustaining drives. This is our biggest issue, and much of it has to do with stupid ass penalties. Make a great play? Guess what, it's negated because somebody wanted to hold. Hey, that 15 yard catch? No good, illegal motion. Third and short? Nope, lets move back another 5 yards for off-sides. The list goes on and on about how we shoot ourselves in the foot time and time again. We aren't going to be contending with anybody until that gets fixed. If it doesn't, don't expect this team to go far.

My observations:

*RGIII came out looking like he had not been in a game since January...it was to be expected. The entire offense looked like they were out-of-sync with Griffin...it was to be expected.

*Griffin eventually got comfortable and his accuracy came back. He proved he can still run effectively AND SAFELY. He showed that he has learned from his injury and went towards sidelines instead of trying for the extra yard. He's playing smart and taking care of himself.

*The defense, despite being on the field for the entire first half effectively, did make some great stops and hit Vick a lot. Vick's passing numbers were mediocre as expected with only one WR, whose numbers of course looked like he was the only receiver.

*Good show, Chip. No one saw these crazy formations with an offensive tackle lined up as a WR coming...but it's not going to be effective much longer. It's on film. The league will figure it out. In fact, the Redskins figured it out before the game was over. Once you slow down, which you HAVE to do, your offense is nothing special.

*Michael Vick will not last the season. He might not last half of the season. He was hit hard and hit often last night and was visibly hurt before the 60 minutes were up.

*The pace does wear down the opposing defenses. It also wears down the Philly offense. Early in the second half, the Eagles offensive players were cramping up, gasping for air and even McCoy had to sit down. He had a great night but even he can't keep it up for 4 quarters. It may work in college with no limits on roster size, 20 year-olds running around for you and inexperienced defenses, but an injury-prone 33 year-old QB won't be able to keep this up. He barely made it through the first game.

*I am not panicked about our team. Once things settled down on both sides of the ball, we started to look like the team I'm expecting this year. We will still win the division. We have a more talented, deeper roster than anyone in the division. Dallas has defensive and offensive line issues, Tony Romo and a starting RB who can break in any minute. New Jersey has NO running game or defense. The Philly experiment will take a similar course to the Spurrier Project. We'll be fine. Griffin will come back to the superstar we knew last year. Morris will be running over the league again. Our defense will dominate teams we can actually prepare for. Kai won't miss any more easy FGs.

*I'm in shock by how the game started but no one knew what crazy Chip would pull out of his magic bag. It's out now. We've seen it and we'll figure it out just like the rest of the league. I'll give them until about week 6 before they start the inevitable downslide. He's going to run his players into the ground. Vick WILL get hurt soon. The other two QBs are not mobile and cannot run the offense like Vick can. If McCoy gets hurt, they have only DeSean Jackson left on offense and he has no track record of making it through a full season health-wise or mentally. He's all dancing and taunting (and fighting) when they're winning, but when they lose, he checks out.


HTTR. Next week will be better for RGIII and everyone. Every week will get better than the last as he settles back into live football. I'm thrilled he not only started to back back into the pace of the game before the first game was even over, but that he played smart and made it through the first game unscathed. He took some huge hits and even when being drilled into the ground by a LB, he got his legs up and protected his knees.

I read the game-day thread and some people were calling for Cousins and even Pat White. Robert needs reps. He won't get back to himself in practices, he needs regular season game reps. There was no other way to bring him back than put him in the game and let him find his groove again. If we benched him for a month to practice and brought him in Week 4 or 5, the rust would still be there. He's been practicing. He needs to play and the sooner we get his game back, the sooner we start dominating the league. There's absolutely no reason to delay that for any number of weeks. He's healthy, he needs to stay in and play through his inevitable early struggles. He made a lot of progress last night.

He'll be fine, people. We'll be fine. Even if it takes a few more games to get this thing rolling at full speed, don't overreact and panic. Remember last season? 3-6 start? We finished 10-6 and ARE DIVISION CHAMPIONS. We shall repeat. This isn't Zorn and Campbell. This is a Super Bowl-caliber coaching staff and front office with one of the greatest athletes on the planet right now running the show.

The new Steve Spurrier is wearing an ugly shade of green this season.

Good post I agree. If we are 2-2 at the BYE I think we are in a good position.

Week 3 and 4...Detroit and Oakland. 2-2 is probable.

Green Bay just had a disaster trying to defend OUR offense being run by SF. 3-1 is even possible, but I won't give up on the team if Griff needs a few more games to settle in.

Problem with Philly is you cant run that no huddle stuff all season long, guys will get worn down and I'm sorry but we really gave them that W with those 3 TO's and safety early on. I would still say we win the east at 10-6

Yeah that's why I'm questioning whether they can hold up all year at that pace. More plays = more possibilities of injuries, and Chip's pass pro schemes seems to leave the QB open for some big hits. Once there's more tape on this offense I think defenses are going to blitz more and more.

we hit vick a bunch and how many sacks did we have? 4? and thats with RAK getting 0

I just love how people think we can just show up and beat Detroit. Same thing people said about last night too. Did anyone happen to catch Oakland? They very easily could have beaten Indy at Indy. One game at a time people.
