Since it began the player-safety crackdown in October 2010, the NFL has legislated Clark’s strengths as a player out of the game. A physical, big-hitting safety who was an intimidating presence in the deep-middle of the field, Clark cannot even attempt to play as he did in helping the team win a lot of games during his first four-plus seasons here. Now an unrestricted free agent who will be 35 in October, Clark would appear to be a guy the Steelers will move on without. The way the game is legislated now, free safeties are more valuable if they’re ball-hawks instead of big-hitters.

honestly I was thinking the same thing ... this signing would be about 8 damn seasons too late... I just don't think this would be a smart way to spend money for us ... I just don't..

Bowen is Hatchers best friend in real life. It might of been one of the big reasons he signed with the Redskins. I doubt they cut Bowen.

They can definitely rework some deals to free up another 10-12 million in space.

But you gotta remember that I believe after year three Morris can ask for bigger contract (any player selected after the 1st round can get an year 4 contract upgrade 1st rnd after year 4), Kerrigan, and Orakpo following 2014.

We can't put a ton of cash into the future.

Plus we still have possible cuts along other units. OL guys have been mentioned (Chester, Monty, KL).

We can make whatever moves we want work with the contracts we are paying out.

Exactly. The Hatcher pick up not only improves the dline push up the middle that was our biggest problem on D, but should really help our secondary - which appeared to be the biggest problem on D. We could have had a couple pro bowlers at safety last year and they still would have been in trouble with the quick pass. This move imo has made FA a success - we didnt break the bank, and we filled a huge hole with one guy. He is 32 but has only been a starter since 2011. He is in great shape for A 32 year old. Should have three primo years left at least. I love this move. Curious as to what his guaranteed money is though.

I think what the front office is doing is brilliant. They're using free agency for what it's intended for: depth mostly and only signing the big name when it's affordable and a wise decision. Next, they'll use the draft to actually build their championship team.

A lot of you guys old enough to remember should remember that the team that was built during the early 80's - the team that went on to become Super Bowl champions - was a team labeled as misfits and no-names. Sounds familiar!
