Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

Hatcher in his conference call with Skins beat writers today....Awesome.

"Further discussing the appeal of playing for the Redskins, he said, "Just the rivalry, man. Just to get back to smash-mouth football, and just to get back at the Cowboys. It’s going to be a very exciting game when I go back down there to play the Cowboys. I’m looking forward to it. That’s one of the main reasons, the rivalry, to stay in it. If you come out of here and win the Super Bowl, you’ve earned it. It’s one of the hardest divisions in football."

As someone pointed out, Fletcher was 32 when we signed him. 32 isn't the ideal but if we get 2 solid years that's great and anything more is gravy.

Fletcher is the exception, not the rule.

You're letting your pessimism get the better of you.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this signing. In fact, it's a great signing for us. We're getting a disruptive player who will push the pocket. He has relatively low mileage in terms of career snaps. Has has proven to be durable. We're getting him on what is essentially a two-year cap friendly deal. He was a Pro Bowl player in 2013 when he had more sacks than Brian Orakpo.

What more could you want from Bruce Allen? Perhaps he could come over your place and wash your car if that would make you happier.

I like the signing. I am getting adjusted to new way of doing business at Redskins park. The safety position needs to be addressed with a veteran. I am surprised we haven't set an appointment with Chris Clemons.

I couldn't agree more. I like the way Clemons plays the game. I'm mystified that there hasn't been more of a market for his services. We should take advantage. He's way better than anyone we currently have.

Add Penn and Clemons plus a couple vet min types and I'll be satisfied with what we've done in FA this year.

Edit: Based on the above post, nevermind about Clemons.

I was thinking we would take a look at Brandon Spikes but he signed a 1 yr. deal with the Bills. I hope we can get a deal with Donald Penn Saturday .

If I had to guess, I'd bet on Donald Penn getting more money from Oakland, but it's a good sign that there's really only two teams in the running.

I could see the Bengals or Panthers getting involved if the price falls far enough.

That's not likely to happen due to the law of supply and demand.

As for Oakland, with their cap space I suppose they could sign anybody they want if the player is just about getting the most money.

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

Terms of Jason Hatcher Deal per John Keim (ESPN):

Hatcher received a $9-million signing bonus and has $10.5 million guaranteed. There's no guaranteed money after the first year and with his base salary escalating by a considerable amount in the third year, the Redskins could cut him and he would count $4.5 million against the cap (unless they can spread it out over two years at $2.25 million per). It's hard to imagine Hatcher getting to that final season considering his cap hit would be hefty for a player who would be 35 entering the season. But if he's still playing well? Different story.

Here's the breakdown, courtesy of ESPN Stats & Information:

2014
Base salary: $1.5 million (fully guaranteed)
Cap hit: $3.75 million

2015
Base salary: $3 million
Cap hit: $5.25 million

2016
Base salary: $6.5 million
Cap hit: $8.75 million

2017
Base salary: $7.5 million
Cap hit: $9.75 million

Just added the release fees. As CRed says, it's a two year contract. It costs more to release him then keep him in 2015 so he is likely on the roster. In 2016, he is unlikely to make the roster unless the contract is redone or he is has had a couple of monster years for us.

Moreso, Fletcher was at the extreme end of the spectrum, others who are done and out by age 31 are on the other end of the spectrum. Where Hatcher falls is yet to be determined.

If we get two solid years this would have to be viewed as a good contract. If he is cut a year from now it wasn't.

Hatcher will be 32, but he hardly has alot of wear and tear on his body. His first start was 2010.
