Im perplexed by the plan at safety. Looks like we really never had one.

Maybe we are satisfied with the choices we expect to have in the draft.

Im no expert, but whose there in the second round? I heard a scout say on radio last week the draft was deep at alot of positions, safety was one of the least deep.

Maybe we don't plan to stay in the second. Maybe Kirk and our second move us up into a spot in the first where we get a safety.

Certainly, this safety class isn't as deep as last year's, but there'll be some good ones available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Calvin Pryor from Louisville(possibly late 1st), Jimmie Ward from Northern Illinois, Deone Bucannon from Washington State, and Terrence Brooks from Florida State will all be drafted in the 2nd-3rd rounds. Pryor and Brooks would probably be our best bets among those listed, being free safeties. My favorite is Deone Bucannon; he's more of a strong safety.

Pryor likely will go in the 1st and we will likely have to trade up to get him.

The other choices you listed are ok, but are developmental players who likely won't start in 2014. We still need a FS for 2014.

Perhaps we will see a viable FS in the draft fallout: given that the draft is richer this year, it stands to reason that June 1 vet cuts will be richer than ever.

Thats a little concerning because at least going in it seems like there hasn't been a highly regarded safety class for a couple years now. Though looking back last year was probably the first respectable class to come along since 2010 (Eric Berry and Earl Thomas) and before that 2007 (the year Landry was drafted).

To put it in perspective Scouts Inc has 11 players at Tackle this year with a 3rd round or better grade compared to just 5 safeties. Maybe not the best apples to oranges comparison but then again you usually play with 2 tackles and 2 safeties so might not be too crazy.

And Philip Thomas?

We're essentially getting an extra 2nd-round talent player with him coming back. We stole him in last year's draft.

Thomas is a year behind and still a rookie. Rambo showed he doesnt belong on the field. Ryan Clark, how much does he have left? Shit give me Merriweather and T Jax.

Im not happy about no starting FS and SS.

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

Maybe the plan is to let Thomas and Rambo duke it out at SS and count on TJax to return successfully to FS.

I'm not saying it's a good plan...but it is a plan.

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

I have to agree -- I think it is a mistake not to sign at least one possible starting safety given our current status. Not saying we had to break the bank for Byrd (in fact, I am glad we didn't), but there were others (we could have afforded Mike Mitchell, for example), and it doesn't seem like there's much FA safety talent left.

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

Question: if we get TJax back, will he be better than Mitchell or some other reasonably priced FA?

I would say no and I think we will bring him back.

When you look at the deals TJ Ward and Jenkins got, its tough to say we couldnt compete with those.

You cant pay that type of money for Whitner or Byrd imo or even Mitchell. But there is no reason not to bring Clemons in on deal comparable to a no name Guard from Cleveland. Sorry, im not buying it.

As stated multiple times in multiple threads already, it is a two way street. Players have to WANT to come here too.
