The bad things that Winston has been accused of doing should not be not be euphemistically dismissed as immature or stupid actions. They should be identified as what they are - crimes. He has been accused of crimes.
As a 20 year-old he could be a married father or a soldier in combat, so please don't call him a kid either. He is a young man who, as an adult, is responsible for his own actions.
