As he approaches, he ducks his head and slightly changes his angle. Had he not done both, he would have hit Smith dead on helmet to helmet.
EDIT: Given the angle of approach, it seems pretty clear to me he is trying to get his shoulder in first. Again, I think another player gets a pass but BM does not.
