do they completely disregard the legal system and kick him out of the league? is there a process for that that is fair as well as capable of pleasing the court of public opinion?

this is why the NFL's move (back around when Vick got in trouble) to run as some moral police over their league parallel to the justice system was stupid. i, as well as many others, said it at the time (we can't say much now though, because you're attacked when you do.) it only leads down one path, and this is that path.

the NFL is going to look super stupid when Rice wins his appeal for being disciplined twice for the same thing, all as a PR move.

the league needs to reverse course. they're a business and they should discipline players of on the field issues and let the legal system handle off the field issues.

there is no winning. there will be mistakes, uneven punishments, and situations that don't make sense.

if they don't then their only other option is to way over discipline players. and i'll laugh my ass off when all these righteous redskins fans start complaining about how unfair it is one of our guys got a ridiculous punishment before being found guilty of anything.
I have mixed emotions about this, on one hand I do think the NFL should wait to see what the justice system says, but on the other hand they are public figures and are held accountable in ways that the average public is and they know that when they sign their contract. I work in education and I recognize that being an educator of the youth my private life has to remain exactly that. If a family sees me having a drink at the bar and tells the administration at my school that I was drunk I might find myself at the warehouse instead of the classroom until an investigation is completed. Is it fair? no but it comes with the territory.

It comes with the territory you allow it to come with.

Yes, society has reached the point that as a teacher you cannot been seen doing that. The same people that treat you as an over-paid babysitter can't stand the idea that you might be normal and enjoy a drink in your free time.

But do we want to further it more?

The same social forces going after the NFL, the Vikings, and the Ravens are the same ones coming after us for having a racist team name.

It's all righteous feel good stuff until its your team being targeted for whatever reason.

Be careful what we wish for.

I wouldnt call wanting justice served for beating a woman or child "righteous feel good stuff". As far as the meaning/intent/origin of a nickname by a bunch of politicians looking for low hanging fruit to pounce on - sure.

Except the racism stuff is being fueled by a minority and a lot of white guilt (my opinion on the guilt thing) and people just banged their drum over and over and over until folks finally started paying attention.

Killing dogs (who can't defend themselves), beating children (who also can't defend themselves) and throwing a left hook at your wife, I'm pretty sure are universally condemnable things.

Well to be fair:
Quote:
The Speedy Trial Clause of the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution provides that "[i]n all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy trial."[1] The Clause protects the defendant from delay between the presentation of the indictment or similar charging instrument and the beginning of trial.
If his trial isn't suppose to take place until 2015, isn't that on AP?

Kids he's not even raising! Not to mention, he had a 2 month old that he never met that was beaten to death by his baby mamas boyfriend recently.

The whole thing sickens me.

For those who missed it this latest text exchange should be the nail in the coffin
Quote:
Mother: "What happened to his head?"

Peterson: "Hit his head on the Carseat."

Mother: "How does that happen, he got a whoopin in the car."

Peterson: "Yep."

Mother: "Why?"

Peterson: "I felt so bad. But he did it his self."
Also keep in mind Peterson has not denied anything throughout this whole process except the notion that he's a bad parent.

Re: Around the League: Week 2

Adrian Peterson is a bad role model, I know some people want to separate football from reality, but you just can't.

IMO the court of public opinion serves a valuable purpose, especially in a case like this. We as a society have inflated the importance of entertainers to a level of sacredness. We pay them, we dress like them, our kids idolize them. The problem is, we have judged these men only by there ability on the football field, they have a ton of money and if the get in trouble with the law, they can post bond, and pay for the best lawyers to pay off the worst judges. Ok, maybe. I'm exaggerating a bit, but my point is, if public opinion can help to improve the moral character of these men we overpay and idolize, I'm all for it. It is good for society. It may not be good for your football team, but I'd rather root for, pay, and idolize a man that doesn't abuse the ones he's supposed to love and protect.
