John Keim made a good point as well regarding the RT position.

John Keim: They were linked to two tackles: Derek Newton and Jermey Parnell. Newton re-signed with Houston; Parnell opted for Jacksonville. And once Bryan Bulaga re-signed with Green Bay, the tackle market turned bleak. I would be surprised if they don't make a move here, but there aren't great options left. Morgan Moses is dealing with his Lisfranc injury and we won't get any updates on that for a few weeks. My own opinion is there's no way he'd be ready to start this year. And I'm not sold on Tom Compton, but if nothing else at least he has experience. But I will say: Their season does not hinge on right tackle. They won 10 games with poor right tackle play in 2013; other teams win despite bad lines. Seattle's line wasn't great and the Patriots had issues at guard. They need to upgrade but the point is, don't panic now.
Well, Seattle doesn't depend on their passing play to win games and the Pats have a HoF'er QB that can play behind any line.

The Redskins season will hinge on how much they can move away from being QB dependent, focus on the run, and have this improved defense keeping the game manageable for the offense.

Let's also not forget the impact Bill Callahan can make on our current line. Maybe some good coaching is all they need?

Good point. Yeah completly agree with not making an irrational decision. I think most of the right tackles in free agency was were irrational contracts ..beluga, the cowboys backup Parnell(?) included. I think my original post stated just pointed out we needed starters still and what were the options. I think some have a hard time reading

But Callahan coming in could help tremendously.

And hopefully he does a better job at developing our young players.

Can't fix the entire team in one year. Hopefully these positions are addressed in the draft and undrafted free agents.

I would like Goldson from tampa hay!. Two year contract 6M. Draft Amos to study under him for two years then promote him to starter.

I would rather eat clam chowder directly off of a public bathroom floor than pay Dashon Goldson 3 million dollars a year.

I've done that. It's not as great as it sounds.

The draft is thin at Free, but at Tackle there are many versatile players available in the college ranks, but none seem talented enough for a top 5 pick.

I would still keep my eye on Goldson in Tampa to see if he will be released. While Im not a huge fan, he is talented enough to start and be productive in this league on a 1 year deal. Stevie Brown has connections here, he is another I would at least bring in to gauge interest.

Right Tackle, Barksdale is still available and probably the most talented free agent left. Where above I would settle for Goldson as talented enough to still be productive, I dont see it in Barksdale with what his price is gonna command. I think we need to spend at least our 2nd round pick on Right Tackle.

Its frustrating for the last 5 years we seem to have the same discussions for these same damn positions. Whats your plan at these starting spots for 2015?
the last line is as true as truth can be!!!

Has SM been a trader in the past, or has his drafts tended to be the picks he goes in with. I could see him being the kind of guy that knows the position each of his draft picks is at and him knowing exactly what/who he wants there.

Re: Right Tackle and Free Safety

I noticed a whole lot of nearly immediate interior pressure last year as well. Hard to blame the QB when they are getting hit as soon as they look up. We need more than just a RT.

We have basically been the laughing stock of the NFL for the last 20 years. People are blaming RG3 for that like the rest of the team was great watch the film he's not the only one to blame. I can wait a little longer give this guy a line then we can talk. This is my opinion and you ain't changing it.

Going from "nothing to do with the QB" to "he's not the only one to blame" is a change in opinion and a more accurate statement of what happened last year.

The line can get better. It is average to below average. It isn't terrible. I believe the biggest improvement the line has to make as a unit is power blocking on short yardage. We were pure crap this year picking up 1st downs on the ground. Hopefully as we get bigger, this will improve.

Almost every talking head who played for the skins, from Colt Brennan to Cooley, to Brian Mitchell preaches that sacks are 50/50 on the line and the QB. In fairness, Brunell is the outlier. It isn't QB or line, it is QB and line.

SM didn't think it was the unit in the most dire situation based on where he has spent money so far.

If the line is god awful, how do you explain Kirk Cousin's incredibly low sack rate compared to RG3 and Colt?

Because after Cousins started taking hits, he just threw it as quick as possible regardless of whether the receiver was open. Which is why he threw so many Int's. RG3 held the ball way to long and would bail out instead of climbing the pocket when he could. KC just threw it regardless of whether the receiver was open so he didnt keep taking hits. Just rewatch the NY Giants game, he got lit up in the first half. Second half he was doing everything he could to get the ball out of his hands fast and threw 4 ints.

Its not just the line, we didnt have good pass blocking from RB's or TE's either, plus the QB's clearly added to the mistake. It was an overall break down. But to use KC as the reason to say our Oline wasnt giving up sacks is a mistake. Throwing it to the defense isnt the answer.

Also, Colts sack rate wasnt that much lower than RG3. Based on what you posted earlier, RG3 had 33 sacks while throwing 214 passes. Colt had 17 sacks while throwing 128 passes. Which would equal out to 34 sacks in 256 passes thrown. Better but not exactly a huge difference.
