When did that change? McVay helps formulate the plan for the offense (as well as Callahan helping with the running game), and each has an input to Jay about what they think should be called, but Gruden has always been the one to call the plays.

Asked point-blank, ‘Who’s going to call plays,’ McVay first responded with a quip: “Well, I’ve had people ask me that, and my answer is: well, if the play works, that was definitely my call. If not, not my call.”

It’s a great question, because ultimately, I know Jay’s been asked a lot about that,” he said. “And when we go into a game plan, as far as the weekly preparations — everybody talks about scripting, and having your openers, and making sure that each situation is covered so that we know what to anticipate — but Jay will be the play-caller.
