Sorry to pop this thread up, but I found this article about a Washington State High School whose mascot's name is... the Redskins:

The majority of people living in this town are Native Americans, and they don't think the name is offensive.

Not being American, it's hard for me to get an opinion on this matter, so I found this article interesting because it's written by someone who thinks the Redskins' name is offensive... but is forced to admit it is not to some of the only ones it should (or shouldn't) offend.

Here are some interesting parts:


-"Take Clarence Le Bret, who at 90 says he’s the oldest male tribal member in town. Controversy, what controversy, he says. “It’s the traditional name we always had.”"

-"Here, the kids have their “Wellpinit Redskins” T-shirts and sweatshirts they wear to games or Spirit Week. At games, they chant, “Redskin Power!”

I think there's some southwest US states with reservations that use the name too. It's just that story isn't as interesting as a small percentage of Native Americans calling us racists.

My understanding is that the term Redskins actually derived from the tradition of using red war paint prior to going into battle. The Celts did similar marking themselves with blue dye. Would a team with a Celtic warrior named the Blueskins be offensive?

I do love how PC snowflakes feel the need to take up for a group that largely views the entire name thing as a non-issue. Numerous polls have been done among Native American groups and as a whole they have no issue with the name.

My HS are the Redskins and fortunately they haven’t caved yet. My college are the Bullets, some even think that’s offensive. We’ve gotten to the point you can’t say or do anything without hurting someone’s inner child.

At this point, I am just a bit done with even dealing with it. There are hundreds of acceptable ways to name the team while keeping a native american tradition alive. It's stupid to see certain sports news outlets referring to us as the "Washington Football team", and yes, it's giving in to PC/social crybabies, but it's a team name, not the Washington Monument, or other national memorials.

Just change the name a little, get the land by Oxon Hill farm, build a new stadium and bring home a Superbowl. Is that so hard?

I don't believe I've ever heard anyone use the term "redskin" as a racial slur against Native Americans. I have, however, heard some idiots use the term "chief" that way.
