Redskins GM won't sign Cousins at expense of other good, young players

This is interesting

Quote:
Washington Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan says he wants to re-sign quarterback Kirk Cousins to a long-term extension, but not if it means he can't afford to pay the team's young prospects.

"(You've) got to step back and say 'Okay, who do we have next year? (Are) there three to five to seven guys that we want to extend prior to the last year of their deal, or do we want to go after one and know we’re going to lose three or four next year?" McCoughan replied to a question about Cousins on SiriusXM Bleacher Report Radio, according to Dan Steinberg of The Washington Post.

"So it’s a fine line, and like I said, it’s tough, but that’s why we do this," McCloughan continued. "It’s the market. The NFL’s a phenomenal, phenomenal entity, and the money’s incredible. But the way I look at it is I want Kirk in a long-term deal, no doubt about it, but also I’m not gonna put our franchise in a situation where we’re gonna lose three or four younger guys that I think are gonna be good football players for one guy. I won’t do it. You know, that’s just how it is.

"And the quarterback position’s very very important, but you know what, so is every other position," McCloughan added. “We need football players. We need multiple football players, not one."

McC street cred in the lockerroom just went up a notch(not that he really needed anymore). This is why when McC's down on the field before and after the game, players are coming up to this guy smiling, hugging, etc. They respect this guy and want to play for him.

He building a TEAM folks...Its all about TEAM. Not 1 player.

Call me negative Nancy, but to me, that sure sounds like he knows they are getting Cousins on a one year deal, and then he will walk while they build the rest of the team. Otherwise, he would have never made that statement about not being able to keep the young guys. My guess is they figure that if they get all the pieces around the QB, they could make do with any scrub / average Quarterback that they wouldn't have to break the bank for.

I doubt they figure that.
Nobody wins championships with scrub QBs.

It happens, just not often.

Negative Nancy,

A year in football is a decade in normal life. Give Cousins 20million this year, and next year, if he has proven himself, he will understand that it takes a team. This year was simply both sides setting limits and that's ok. We don't want KC taking a low offer and skipping out of town at the end, AND we don't want the team overpaying and being tied to him if the typical redskin qb scenario plays out.

The team has and will pay for players who are worth paying for, if KC shows himself to be a competent qb, he will be with the team for a long time. Money will not be the reason he leaves.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

Chris Russell: Redskins Trying to ‘Humiliate’ Kirk Cousins « CBS DC

I missed posting this one earlier. I think all of it sounds pretty true. Mr. Snyder probably hates that "football people" proved him wrong on a player for the 3,762nd time since he became owner. He is pissed off about the RG3 epic failure, and not about to take it lightly. He absolutley would want to humiliate and embarass Cousins even if it means a losing season. He has shown that in the past, with coach firings, etc... Nobody gets one up on him, nobody.....

In the end, it is unalienable fact: This is Mr. Dan Snyder's team, and in the end, he will always get what he wants as owner... The players and personnell that are here, will only be here if he wants them.

That piece is completely devoid of any facts at all. That doesn't immediately send up red flags about the legitimacy of this "journalism"?
