It is a way, WAY better metric than passer rating, which is an absolutely horrendous stat. If you go 4/4 for 65 yards on a drive in a one-score game in the 4th quarter, that gets you the same passer rating as if you go 4/4 for 65 yards in a drive during garbage time when you're down by 21 points in the fourth quarter.
I can fully and completely explain QBR to anybody interested, it definitely should be used instead of passer rating.
