@AKinkhabwala
Let's be clear, as @Alex_Flanagan been saying all day: Kyle Shanahan on 6yr contract. Not mortgaging future for anyone, incl Kirk Cousins

While signing Brian Hoyer doesn't mean jack shit, they aren't about to give us a truck load of picks for Cousins.

Hoyer signing means that he's their stopgap

Mike Clay‏ @MikeClayNFL 4m4 minutes ago
Of course...but he's also a fine seat warmer for a potential Round 1 or 2 draft pick.

If I had to guess now, I'd still say they will try and trade for Kirk. I believe this is a backup plan for not getting Kirk this season. Ultimately I think Kirk ends up there regardless but we shall see

It's probably going to come down to compensation. I believe that Allen isn't going to be taken to the cleaners on this deal. (like he was with RG3) Either he gets the compensation close to what he wants to or he rolls with KC as the starter next season. In the same token, I think people hoping for the 49ers #2 overall pick are smoking the good stuff. That isn't going to happen. I even doubt a swap of 1st round picks would work for KC when you calculate what it would take to move from 17 to 2.

I don't believe a swap for first rounders is at all out of the realm of possibility, but it's possible that the 49ers are willing to give the Redskins next year's first rounder and this year's second rounder - which would almost be like a first round pick. Throw in a third rounder either this year or next year, and I think Bruce Allen would bite on that.

However, it's possible Kyle decides to go after Romo now that he's in the free and clear. He would be free, then to draft a quarterback and have that guy sit behind Hoyer and Romo for a year or so. That way, the 49ers still get a quarterback that can make an immediate impact, one that has won in the post season, and a solid backup in case Romo went down with injury. All the while having the future quarterback on the roster. That might be a more attractive move than to go for Cousins this year. And if things don't work out with Romo this year or they don't draft a quarterback (or both), then they can probably get Cousins next year without having to mortgage the future.

This fucked up (known as "normal" in Redskins Park) Kirk Cousins business seems to have everybody on edge.

Personally, I'm trying to keep my cool but I'm telling you that the familiar stink of Danny is all over this shit. Snyder probably has his eye on some college QB that Smithers will draft with our #17 pick.

I don't get what's f*cked up about it. Do you really expect a player in his prime and an NFL team would get a deal done before a deadline?

It's fucked up because of the indecision of the front office at the end of the 2016 season. They needed to make a yes or no decision on keeping Kirk at that time in order to ever get a reasonable long-term deal with him, if that is what they decided they wanted. When they tagged him, it was crystal clear, even to a non-professional like me, what that decision meant. It meant they would not be getting a reasonable deal in the future due to the mechanics of the franchise tag. They knew that if Kirk had a successful season that they were going to have to pay him Top 5 money, at least Top 5 for now until the real Top 5 guys sign new contracts. It's called QB salary inflation.

On top of that, they deceived Kirk by telling him that if he had a good season in 2017 that he would get paid. He not only had a good season but he had a very good season. Apparently, he needed to play like Tom Brady to satisfy somebody at Redskins Park and get that contract they promised him.

Now, they are trying to low ball him when they should have patted him on the back right after the season ended and signed him to a lucrative contract, announcing to the world that "We're headed for bigger and better things and Kirk is our leader".

They fucked it up.

Meh, I am ok that they didn't go all in last year. This year, I am surprised they haven't but still KC needs to be a cooperative partner. If they offered 6 years 120 million with 60M guaranteed, even that's "only 20M/per year" it's still a top 5-10 payout. I can understand KC wanting to play his leverage out to the hilt to get every possible dollar, but that doesn't mean the FO effed it up. KC is not a sure fire elite qb. He is a surefire top 10 qb. I think that 20M per year (though I expected them to offer 23M) is a rational offer.

But Kirk Cousins didn't have the same success he had in the previous season, since the team didn't make the playoffs, and his last showing was pretty bad. Especially when considering that he wants to be the highest paid QB.

You do realize that Von Miller, who was the Super Bowl MVP and arguably the best player at his position that year, was tagged and the negotiations went all the way to the July deadline?

Honestly, we are in a situation where neither side needs to agree to anything. Cousins' side is going to hold off until they get the deal they want and so will the Redskins. This is the way business is done in the NFL.

Here, read this piece by Andrew Brandt, which explains way better the whole Cousins' situation from a NFL business perspective: You Would Treat Kirk Cousins the Same Way | The MMQB with Peter King

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread

First - we need real KC news so we can have a legitimate reason to start a new thread - This one has gone to crazy land of opening the first page when I click go to last post.

2nd. You have to wonder, if KC does stay, and with less weapons and a first time OC, does have a statistically worse year than last year, does he knock potential bidders out of a 6yr 140M deal. I know he will have 44M and who needs more, but if it's about worth and respect, he may find he shoots himself in the foot by pushing this too far.

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread

From overthecap top qb's and APY

Player APY
Andrew Luck $24,594,000 (3 playoff wins and 1st pick hype)
Drew Brees $24,250,000 (SB win)
Kirk Cousins $23,944,000 (1 and a bit playoff losses)
Joe Flacco $22,133,333 (SB win)
Aaron Rodgers $22,000,000 (SB win 17 playoff appearances)
Russell Wilson $21,900,000 (SB win)
Ben Roethlisberger $21,850,000 (SB wins)
Carson Palmer $21,000,000 (1 playoff win )
Eli Manning $21,000,000 (SB wins)
Philip Rivers $20,812,500 (4 playoff wins)

This is just to say that if KC chooses not to accept an offer that has an APY of around 22M, (i get contract inflation) then I'm not going to fault the FO for not getting him signed. Even at 20M that's probably a legitimate point of where his talent alone puts him.

This puts it all into perspective..Hell no don't pay him more than Rogers..he needs to be real..load it with incentives so if he is all that he could make 25 million plus..

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread

@JasonLaCanfora
The Skins actually intend to pay Cousins off his franchise tag this year, unlike a year ago, and by July 15 that's likely to happen...

SF will go with Hoyer and find a young QB thru draft or otherwise. If Cousins is a UFA in 18, sure, Kyle Shanahan loves him, but it's big if

There were no trade talks b/n WSH and SF and likelihood of Cousins trade was always low, but Hoyer signing effectively totally scuttles it..
