Kirk cheated the offseason rules by training at Jon Gruden's camp. Similar offense concepts, that was smart, it made him better. That won't be available to him anymore. Kirk is a good between the 20's QB. Redzone he is marginal at best. Trust me... Josh Allen, Rosen, Darnold, Baker Mayfield will be just as good and in time better than Kirk under Gruden and co.
Same as Brees IMO, great QB but that system is what makes him lethal.

Let me rephrase it as exploiting a "unique loophole". I refuse to put Kirk before the team regardless of who the leadership is. He is not worth the money it will take to keep him, knowing the many holes we have on the roster. It is best to admit the mistake or not signing him earlier and moving on.

Keenum & Bortles are playing championship games ...wow ! So does this change anything with Cousins? I see it this way You got 4 teams left QB'S are ..Foles,kennum,Bortles..and Brady. This Tells me for sure you don't have to have an ELITE QB to win playoff games..who would have thought Ryan,Big Ben,Brees sitting home watching Foles(by injury),Keenum,Bortles..WOW! I like Cousins and wish like heck we could have signed him way back when he could be had cheaper..But seems to me Defense ,overall play by Offense
WR,Running game .solid special teams may be more of factor than I thought..Do you guys believe That Brady could have led this team to playoffs? If not then i can't see how we make Cousins the HIGHEST paid Player in the League..its all about the money/cap thing.

I love cousins too. Watching these games though makes our lack of defense and a running back stand out.

Wow. These running backs are so good at strong cuts together.

We haven't had a true good RB1 since CP. Morris was great one yr but that was the scheme. He was solid the rest

Drew Brees makes it clear he isn’t going anywhere – ProFootballTalk

No surprise here but KC is officially the best QB on the market.

Re: Cousins Saga 4.0. Is he done in DC?

I think the teams remaining in the playoffs illustrate how important defense is. Vikings, Eagles, Patriots, Jaguars, all top notch defensive teams.

Eagles and Pats got there with top notch QBs AND strong defense. Vikings and Jags got there with journeyman level QBs and strong defense.

Thinking you can't build a defense if you sign Cousins is faulty thinking though. The Jags signed a few studs this year, but they drafted Dante Fowler, Jalen Ramsey, and Myles Jack to name a few.

And the Vikings #1 defense is almost entirely homegrown.

It comes back to the draft and coaching in the end. We need to land some very good defensive players in the draft and we need to continue developing our own. And yes, that's possible with Kirk getting paid top dollar.

Our picks are solid players but we def don't have anyone close to Ramsey or Smith / Jack on our D.

Because I like to have quick replies, I dont need to go into a long ass paragraph to agree/disagree.

Both have cheap QBs. (or extreme value for what they are being paid)

Let's be real. A huge reason the Patriots can do what they do is because they have one of the top QBs in NFL history that takes much less than what he could get so that the team benefits. He values winning more than he does getting max dollars. It's a unique situation and one we'll probably never ever see again while we are alive. Not many men marry models worth 300+ million while they themselves are worth 180+ million.

Look at Brady's cap hit the past years:

2013- $13,800,000
2014- $14,800,000
2015- $14,000,000
2016 - $13,764,706
2017 - $14,000,000

This allows you to continue to have a competitive team year in and year out. You won't find another QB to give up the kind of money he's given up to keep his team competitive. That's one thing I admire Brady for. He's left a lot on the table in order to win. Then again, it does help when you and your wife have a net worth of 500 million dollars.

On a side note, it's amazing how very little the Patriots spend on the OL.

Re: Cousins Saga 4.0. Is he done in DC?

Yeah Mason Foster is a fine player, but if he's a starter then you have a hole on your defense that the best offenses can exploit. He's not fast enough so a good coordinator can figure out how to get a guy isolated on him and exploit the matchup.

A good MLB corps will include Zach Brown, but he needs a much better running mate next to him. Foster can play for me as a 3rd MLB.

At safety, DJ is OK and Nicholson looks promising but I wouldn't stand pat there either. Everett belongs at the very bottom of the depth chart. A good safety tandem needs to have somebody extremely rangy back there. Nicholson could be it, but we just don't know if he can stay healthy. So I'd look to get a top notch athlete back there somehow and tell all of them to sort it out by competing for jobs in camp. Ideally, that new guy will be so good that he'd go to the top of the chart, and you'd have Swearinger and Nicholson fighting for the 2nd job.

Corners, I'm actually fairly excited about Fuller and Moreau. Happy with Norman too. Dunbar's a good 4th. But you can't have too many corners so draft another.

And then where it matters most, the defensive front / rush. I think Allen can start on a top notch defensive line, and Kerrigan can on the edge. Otherwise, not good enough all around. I'll take Ioannidis as a rotation guy in the nickel, and Lanier for depth. But Stacy McGee, Ziggy Hood and Terrell McClain should be rotation guys at most. We need a stud to play next to Allen. A stud DT who can both disrupt the run and the passer.

And Preston Smith, Trent Murphy, Junior Galette and Ryan Anderson should be rotation guys on a decent team. I want a speed rusher on the other side of Kerrigan.

This is what the best defenses look like, solid at every spot, and average players end up in rotation/depth roles.

I'd definitely try to put the 1st rounder towards the defensive front or the defensive edge rush, provided it's not a reach when we pick.

We had one with Rak... But like I said above, we NEED a consistent pass rush in order to be a top tier defense. Look at NO, MIN, JAX AND NE.. All have guys that get to the QB, yesterday Cam Jordan was a monster all day.. We don't have that guy

Those teams also have very good interior push so that the QB can't just escape the edge rushers with a little step forward in the pocket.

The only time this year Preston Smith looked valuable was when Allen was healthy and pushing the pocket.

The Saints have Cam Jordan but Sheldon Rankins was helping him out quite a bit. The Vikes have Everson Griffen but Linval Joseph was a difference maker. The Jags acquired Marcel Dareus in the interior and now look even better on defense.

I think Allen is one of those very disruptive forces for us. I'd like another, with Ioannidis and Lanier in contributing roles. Edge rusher is huge but I think one more stud interior lineman would have the biggest impact on the entire defense, making the jobs easier for the edge rushers and the MLBs.
