One reason why the #Redskins won't actually franchise tag and trade Kirk Cousins: If he gets tagged/traded, he won't negotiate at all with the new team. He'll play on $34M for one year.

I figured that is the word his agent put out. I can see the Skins avoiding players rep by these guys for awhile.

I don't see how this benefits the Skins in any way. Everyone keeps talking about this hypothetical situation with Denver where the skins will get Talib in order to save face. IMO the broncos are going to have to cut players to make room for KC. We can get Talib for less if we wait them out in FA than doing a trade and agreeing to his current cap hit of 12 mil. If he is cut he can be signed for less.

KC has been consistent for the past 3 years that he wants to hit free agency and see his value. He also has been consistent that if he's tagged he will sign the tag and play under the tag. Nothing in his position has changed over the past 3 years. Thank goodness this will all be done in less than a month.

The Jets are supposedly considering either a fully guaranteed contract or 60 million for this season.

I could see a deal with the Jets for picks this and next depending on if he signs a long term deal.

Both of those are the worst ideas I've ever heard. They were so bad I almost didn't read the second sentence.

I think your second sentence is just as terrible because the risk in tagging Kirk severely outweighs the reward. We can't risk Kirk fighting the Redskins and screwing up our ability to improve the team over any attempt to get a decent reward for him.

If Kirk gets a crazy high guarantee that is only good for us, as the comp pick will be as high as possible. If we can get a risk free mid to late 3rd round pick, then why even begin to risk cap and draft penalties to get at best a 2nd. Makes 0 sense.
22 days til FA and this is done.

I agree, it just doesn’t make any sense

But since it’s the Redskins we’re talking about we can’t rule out the possibility of them doing something really stupid

yeah there is no way we could have kept Kirk, even if we really wanted to.

Even if he wanted to stay the team didn’t want to pay him.

Not that kind of $$ he knows he will get in FA. Honestly I think we all can agree that Kirk is not worth $30M next season.

Not to keep rehashing the same BS but if we paid him 2 years ago when he wanted $19M a year he would be a bargain right now. Such is life, I’m ready to move on with Smith.

Re: The FINAL Kirk Cousins Saga thread. 5.0

Yeah he never countered Bruce's offer last summer. So he's either seeing the opportunity for a huge money grab by getting to free agency, or he flat out didn't want to be a Redskin. Either way that screams he's not the right leader for us.

Once he refused to counter Bruce's offer, the writing was on the wall. It was clear he wasn't invested in us for the long term. So there's no reason we should feel the need to be invested in him.

I look forward to the dimension Smith adds with his ability to scramble. Replacing Fuller will not be easy but now there's a path forward. I'm more excited for the future than I was after the 2016 season when Cousins lit it up. Having things settled at QB is key.
