I think it was Jimmy Johnson or Tony Kornheiser or Micheal Wilbon that said yesterday the that the state of coaching in the NFL is the worst we have seen is 50 years.
I think a big part of that is the state the players are in when they arrive in the NFL today. A Dwayne Haskins with extremely poor fundamentals was an extreme rarity decades ago, now they are common place. I think it is an effect of the lack of discipline and the levels of contact in practice from days gone by. Combine that with the win at all cost attitude of some of the major college programs and you have the end result of what you see today.

I think the trend away from negative reinforcement toward "atta boys" and participation trophies has had a negative effect. Back when I played in High School and College 40 years ago your typical coach at those levels was the Vince Lombardi hard ass type. Dumb mistakes were meet with a reward of running laps, wind sprints or being called out and embarrassed in front of your teammates.

These days I read where High School coaches have been fired for cussing at players. I see players walk off the field while committing stupid personal foul penalties without being confronted by a coach or fellow players. I could only image what would happen to a player if they did the "dog peeing" act celebrating a touchdown if Woody Hayes was coaching them.
