The Haskins Threat 2.0

I watched Haskins develop here in Columbus for his year at OSU. He is smart, he does catch on quickly. But Urban Meyer does not have a track record for developing pro quarterbacks. Meyer really runs college oriented schemes. So it will take Haskins some time to really grasp the way a pro offense is run. But he is very smart, and he is rather humble, plus he has a lightening bolt on the end of his arm. With patience and the proper grooming, he can be an exceptional QB.

Agree on the smarts, kid knows how to read a defense pre snap very well and he caught on his last 3 games! Give him some time and he'll be good to go

I was listening to some radio talking head but he was more scout oriented, in some way conected to player development in the nfl ..

He liked everything about Haskins but had 2 knocks on him:

Instincts. He said Haskins is football intelligent but doesnt have the instincts the great QBs do. I think I see that, sometimes he holds onto the ball to long looking perhaps to comfortable in the pocket. I try not to judge to much on subjective opinion type analysis but I think you can see that while he is football smart he doesnt have that instinct. However you define "instinct", I dont know.

Inconsistent accuracy. He can be pinpoint accurate on one throw then just miss on another. He said this is something that coaching cant really fix which surprised me bc I think w mechanics and coaching that should be a thing you could improve over time.

Foot work .. goes without saying. Said this is something can be corrected and coached.

I think he gets better at all the things mentioned if he just stays out on the field and plays.

Thanks good stuff. I am hopeful that he is someone who has a really, really, high ceiling. I think I see his potential in some of his play but, not being a person who judges that sh** for a living, it could just be wishful thinking.

Believe me, that is definitely coachable. How he takes the coaching is the question. Hearsay seems to indicate he's coachable, so I think the new staff will fix that.

What I'm looking for is the ability to see the throw that breaks the game open, like good (great?) QBs can. I don't agree with those that say instincts can't be learnt, but he has to show he's learning them. Are those tight throws into coverage a sign he's learning the fine margins of gh e NFL, or just bad plays?...

Haskins had two outstanding last games. That's with a patchwork OL, crappy offensive ideas of Callahan, and no TE of any value. I also think at the end of the season, Callahan started to loosen the restraints on KOC. But still there was too much of his "run-first" philosophy, which really handicapped Haskins and the offense.

So, what do we have to look forward to in 2020? Return of Scherff, Flowers and probably Trent Williams. Addition of a FA OT to replace Moses, a draft pick to upgrade the C. So the OL will be MUCH better in 2020. Then you'll see a NFL-current passing offense run by Scott Turner, instead of Callahan's Jurassic style of play. They'll have McLaurin at WR #1, Steven Sims at slot and probably a very good FA at WR#2 with Harmon as the backup. Of much importance, is the addition of a premium FA TE, such as Hooper - who can block AND catch. The addition of a very good TE will really improve the offense - especially in the red zone.

I think you'll see a big improvement in Haskins, as he extends the big improvement from those last 2 games. The offense will be limited only by Scott Turner's imagination and Haskins growth. At that point, we can ask all the doubters who thought Haskins was a bust after a couple games or those who wanted for him to sit for a whole season or more - what do you say now?
