I personally have lived in Northern Virginia most of my life.
So please note that my recommendations below are from what friends of mine have done in the past when visiting Washington DC.

The recommendations are to stay at a hotel or motel in Springfield VA and use the Franconia Springfield Metro Blue Line Metro to commute around the Washington DC Metro Area.

Several of my friends have flown into DCA [Ronald Regan Washington National Airport]

Taken the Blue Line Metro from DCA to Springfield VA.

Used a hotel shuttle to commute to between the Franconia Springfield Metro station to a hotel in Springfield VA.

Use the Blue Line Metro to commute from Springfield VA to FedEx Field and back.
