I think teams look at him as a bridge qb, a guy who can hold it down with solid play until your young stud gets enough practice to be the guy. Chargers were probably looking at him starting most of the year if not the entire year if he played good, and if he played bad he would have a short leash. The lung piercing just sped up their gameplan.
