For those who haven't clicked the link, basically there's a convention (actually called the Paris Convention, cocorico !) that allows you to file a trademark in any of 178 countries and still have priority at the first application date if you file in another country within 6 months. And some of these countries don't allow online search. So it's a near certainty that somewhere in a tiny unknown country lies the trademark to the next name of this franchise. Doesn't give us any intel concerning this case, but quite fascinating IMO. Envoyé de mon SHV48 en utilisant Tapatalk

Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
Don't we have enough birds in the league anyway? Also I think they want to stay away from anything that could be possibly misconstrued as racist, now or in the future. So that means no to any colors in the name.

As to your second point, it took some very 'magical' thinking to state Redskins was a racist name. But sillier notions have prevailed, humans are imperfect and prone to hysteria, and this is where we are. But to think that anyone could seriously state that Redhawk is racist is going way beyond magical thinking and deep into the realm of absolute stupidity. And, as I have state over and over, there is precedent and those that preceded us have offered help: https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...on-name-issue/ |

Is that possible in today's world? The OK sigh is now construed as racist so I imagine nothing can't be at some point.

Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
I don't think the OK sign is construed as racist. I think it was appropriated by racists IMO there is a difference. That being said if a team logo started showing up as the gear of choice by hate groups then I would suspect some type of change by that team. (note that is not the case with the Redskins)

Re: Name Reveal 2.2.22
Was it really "magical" though? I mean, an expansion team starting up today wouldn't touch the name Redskins. In order to future proof the name, I think avoiding colors in the name is the smart move.
Either way, that issue is over and done for me. Time to move forward. I think Commanders makes the most sense. It can tie into the military as well as a nod to politics in DC. It's generic and not offensive even with the most magical of thinking. |

We are moving forward. We are not discussing bringing Redskins back. We are discussing what would be the best name and that is where you and I diverge radically. I favor something that keys in on continuity and history. Something that can retain most of our logos, our fight song, and similar. The advantage to that is we move forward without completely jettisoning the past. The change is minor, nontraumatic, and gets us well away from the woke's crosshairs. You favor a complete makeover from top to bottom. You are getting an NFL expansion team in all but name (pun intended). The only link to the past will be .... <drum roll> .... Daniel Snyder. In essence, you will be rooting for a team with a USFL sounding name owned by a scuzz. Frankly, I do not see any appeal in that. Now, don't get me wrong. If you are cool with that, more power to you. But imho if we are getting a new team, why not choose a new team like Green Bay which is run by people of a serious nature? |
