Defensive back Bobby McCain is signing back with the Commanders on a two-year, $11 million deal, per @DrewJRosenhaus and @NFLrecord.

McCain is a bottom tier starting safety imo. Thats not necessarily a slight, there is a big gap btw a Bobby McCain and a Deshazor Evertte/Jeremy Reaves of the world.

I was hoping for an upgrade at FS though, a clear cut upgrade.

Looking like we roll into next year with the same secondary that was 4th in most passing yards allowed (4,333 fucking yards)

McCain
Curl
Jackson
Fuller
St Juste

Forrest
Reaves
Apke

What makes you think that is what the secondary will look like next year? I mean we are barely on day 2 of free agency, haven't had a draft yet, and a lot of moves happen between the end of the draft and week 1.

It is a little premature for everyone to be coming to these conclusions as to what this team will look like in September, based on the last one day's worth of action...

Anyway Bobby McCain is solid. I don't even know whether he is a Safety or Cornerback. He's listed as both depending where you look, but that also speaks to his versatility. He's no Jalen Ramsey or Tyrann Mathieu, but he's not getting paid as such either. I think he falls somewhere near 50th for average salary for defensive backs - and that is IF all that 11 Mil is guaranteed.

Im with you 100% on to early to tell or starting moaning ... id rather be quiet vs over paying and weve seen overpaying so far.

But Im not doing that here.

Our starters on secondary are inked in, locked in for 2022. McCain/Curl are your starting safeties, Jackson/Fuller/St Juste are your top 3 corners. I like McCain for what he is a low end starting caliber safety. But he is a starter and im fine with it. I wouldnt be fine with Everette or Reaves type player as a starter week 1.

I did want a clear upgrade at FS but Im not bashing McCain the player. I did want someone who I can trust going single high to be able to stay single high and not let someone get behind him. A true sideline to sideline FS. McCain is a poor man's coverage safety imo.

I dont think im jumping the gun saying McCain/Curl/Jackson/Fuller/St Juste are the starting 5 ... the same starting 5 we had last year sans Collins.

We are going to add a safety, ad a CB4 and CB5 but the starters are pretty locked imo.

We only have 5 picks now too (maybe 6 now, but that was another 7th rounder), so that could have played a part in keeping McClain. Can't fill every position in the draft with our limited picks, so some guys were needed to stay.

Hopefully he plays like he did at the end of the season, and not like the beginning.

I am not ready to say that just yet. It's entirely possible, but it's way too early to say that.

3 days after the tampering period started last year we signed Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tyler Larsen, Kyle Allen, and Dustin Hopkins.

4 days after the tampering period started last year we signed William Jackson and Curtis Samuel.

After that - Adam Humphries, Darryl Roberts, De Andre Carter, Sammis Reyes, Ereck Flowers.

Then we had the Draft...

Then we brought in Charles Leno, Bobby McCain, Ricky Seals-Jones, some other depth pieces throughout the summer.

I'm not sure how you can think - definitively - that they are done in the secondary, or any position group for that matter.

For me Im comfortable with saying our starting secondary is set, unless we draft a secondary guy at 11 (Hamilton/Stingley/Gardner).

I dont think we have the cap or roster need to add an impact secondary FA.

Im talking adding a starter secondary player ... not depth. Most of the guys you listed we either depth or we had a roster need for a starter.

We dont have the cap to add an impact guy in the secondary, any cap needs to go filling out our roster depth .. we have about 40 guys under contract who will make the 53, we have a lot of depth guys to add.

I have to say those 2 signings are head scratchers... McCain wasn't absolutely horrible but I do remember too many blown coverages for him to have zero responsibility in any of them...

Not sure what they see in McCain to give him 11 mill over 2 years. As long as Apke stays on teams I am fine w/ him coming back.
