Re: Commanders Regular Season Thread vol 1

LB - were there any good options? Bobby Wagner but I dont think he would have signed here unless we drastically over paid.

on top of that .. do we need a Mike or a coverage type LB? bc a mike would replace Holcomb and I think we have to give Jamin Davis a chance to show his stuff this year.

I would have preferred a vet upgrade at mike, but with davis and holcomb getting plenty of snaps still.

Im okay w Holcomb and Davis ... just one injury away from a Holcomb injury and Bostic/mayo is playing 100% of D snaps.

idk ..

No real great options at LB that would have been upgrades over holcomb/Davis

On a positive note, Bostic was on the roster in 2020 - playing big minutes - when the defense was pretty decent against average QBs...

Myles jack? 37.7 pff last year but Id trust the steelers in thinking hes worth 8M per.

Jordan Hicks signed with the Vikings and has a 3.5m cap hit. That is the sort of mid level contract we should have been looking at. There is a reasonable argument for not spending big dollars on the likes of B.Wagner or trading for Roquan Smith, but a relatively cheap vet was there to be signed.

Hicks (30 yrs old), 1114 snaps, 116 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 0 ints, 5 PD

Holcomb (26), 1021 snaps, 142 tackles, 1 sack, 2 ints, 2 FF, 1 TD, 7 PD

Outside of Wagner or trading for Roquan ... there wasnt many options and zero good ones. Maybe Hicks would be a slight improvement but Id rather go with our in house guy all things considered. The youngish guy from NE was a good candidate but he stayed in NE.

Corner? There were good players to be had, and still had.

I am not sure whether Hicks is starting in Minnesota, but as a backup to Holcomb with occaisional snaps in goal line etc he would be light years ahead of the guys we have. Plenty of starting experience. Maybe I am being too optimistic, but making some sort of effort to improve our depth was warranted

As for corner, yeah there are loads of experienced vets out there, not sure whether they want backup work or not.

It is incredible that not only did RR and co not fix the LB depth but they seem to have completely wrecked the CB depth too. It is strange because last year they went out of their way to sign a couple of decent/experienced backup CBs onto the roster. McTyer was injured last year, but played well, still a FA, I wonder if they are expecting him to be declared fit sooner rather than later and taking the opportunity in the mean time to look at the young guys they just claimed

I would have taken Myles Jack, Jordan Hicks, Kwon Alexander, Kyle Van Noyle, Joe Schobert, Anthony Barr, Anthony Hitchens (still available), Dont'a Hightower (still available), KJ Wright (still available), and even KPL (still available) over Jon freakin Bostic and David Mustard.
Except Myles Jack, every one of those guys signed for 5M or under.

Even you wanna say nobody would've unarguably taken Holcomb or Jamin's job, it would've brought competition, allowed us to line up a 4-3 if needed, and give us quality depth !
