I think it’s pretty evident it was Johnson and MacDonald as 1a and b…Quinn was the solid fallback. I’m ok with it

It's fairly evident that the media put them there, but I don't think it's evident that that's actually the case.

And by "fallback", if you mean 'let's interview 1a and 1b and see what they are like', and it didn't go as expected, then Quinn emerged as the "fallback", i. e. the best remaining option, I can buy that.

Based on what we know I’d say MacDonald was 1. You don’t offer a contract to someone who you don’t want. After that my bet would be Quinn once again because of the FO saying they are impressed with him in interviews.
