Sometimes when you get hurt you twist reality so it doesn't hurt as much. That appears to be what happened here - his ego got bruised a bit so he's gotta play it off like some alternate reality happened. Almost feel bad for him.

I'd be curious to see if it was a contract situation, where him leaving of his own accord perhaps leaves the team with little to no obligation of paying out his contract.

I don't know if this applies to coordinators, which I assume that is the case, but coaches contracts are guaranteed (unlike player contracts).

If the team wants to save some money and let EB save face a bit, I'm fine with that.
