Saints need to rebuild and need players to be on rookie contracts. Also they may need draft capital for any type of movement in the draft.

This. The way I heard it explained is that if they kept him on, he would count an additional 18 million above the 31 Million dead cap he counts no matter what. By trading him they get rid of that 18 Million and get 3 additional potential players on rookie contracts.
