It is a very smart move to maintain his objectives. There are about 78 million evangelicals in the US. Painting this as a war of righteousness and it is next to impossible not support it. And we are only talking about a small portion of Christians in the US. Considering over 230 million Americans are Christians not only does it appeal to the electorate but the popular vote as well.

Trashing the Pope and posting an image of himself as Jesus Christ most definitely did not play well with his Catholic Conservatives.
