Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins

Our defense sucks. Mix of some starters but that defense sucked.

Well, we played better as the game went on but since it was just backups, how do really judge the performance?

Rookie rbs Kaytron Allen and Robert Henry Jr had good nights.

We won, 20-7.

I watched every single snap. Almost dozed off a few times.. The QB from Rutgers looks more like a keeper over Hartman.

Allen from Penn St reminds me of another version of BRob except slower. But he moves the pile.

Looked like Styles ran in the wrong hole a few times..

He's out for the preseason at least. Rewatching the game now only in 1st quarter, then I'll have my thoughts. We better have a decent backup however this Mariota injury develops.

Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins

A few thoughts pre game vs post game

Center:
Good jones is still a cut candidate, better but still bad, guessing he was partially responsible for Marriott injury.
Gulbin- much better than before when I thought he could be a cut candidate, should take over #2 spot by default
Brunskil- was expecting him to play center as he's probably the best at this point, but I saw him at LG a lot, not sure of performance but he seemed ok. Perhaps they are playing him there to see if he can be the interior swing guy, including center while Gulbin develops.
Key note, the coach says its between good jones and Gulbin (who he will also try at guard) so my mention of Brunskill likely doesn't mean squat

Coleman seemed to do pretty good at LT thankfully. Interior blocking was meh, but good-jones is a major culprit, it was risky playing him and not brunskil or Gulbin, it hurt us.
No idea on connelly, but I haven't really notice a problem so that is good.

Disappointed in Luke, should have dominated, a little down on kaytron allen due to lack of agility, that combined with our current power blocking interior issue makes him a bit of a mismatch. Chris Hilton Jr was quite impressive, he may jeopardize a practice squad attempt. No one else really moved the needle on my perceptions of the offense.
Hartman had another game with questions.

On defense, Newton got pushed around a lot, so that was surprising, was hoping.
Was hoping more from styles and Chanel. Underperformed a bit.

So overall Henry jumped a lot and has a shot at rb4, good jones and Hartman are not good enough and could get guys hurt.

Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins

I like what I saw from Robert Henry Jr. Kid showed pretty good juice in this game. Allen looks like a bruiser with a little wiggle. Not expecting a lot outside the tackles, but he can pound it threw the line. Defense looked decent in general. Like the lb Ale Kaho. He had a pick and seemed to be everywhere.

Hartman can move the ball some but had a bad pick and just don't think he's got a NFL arm. Like what I saw from the rookie qb Kaliakmanis. He had a pretty quick release, good arm strength, and was accurate. Almost throws lasers. Not real mobile but this kid looked pretty good really. Not a bad preseason game overall especially for week 1.

Re: Preseason: Commanders vs Dolphins

I wonder whether Hartman is going to be cut to bring in a FA veteran QB while Mariota is out. He's just not an NFL QB (the rook was better), and it isn't clear what value there is to keeping him as he seems to have hit a fairly low ceiling.

More than anything else, I really would like to see us get through the preseason without any more injuries. I think this is an improved team over last year in every phase of the game, but we need some good health karma to truly find out.

I was surprised Hartman was still on the team honestly. Really do like the kid. He can move some and move the offense some. The arm isn't there though. Pretty clear the rook looked better. No clue what's going on with Mariota. Weird injury.
