It looks like it hits the bottom bar of his face mask. It may have got stuck on the bar and swung back towards him.

Interesting theory, but I think we'd see some spit strings if that were the case (Jenna Jameson anyone? LOL). It appears to make it all the way to the edge of Pittman's facemask and then start backtracking towards Taylor.
