Rookie contracts have gotten WAY out of control. I heard Howie Long say something interesting on the fox pregame show probably a couple months ago. He says rookies should get a flat pay coming into the NFL with incentive escalators. If, after their rookie season, the player is a starter, he can renegotiate his contract. Or something like that. Long said the idea would get alot of support from the player's union because it would put more money in the pool for veterans.

I think there are more busts than booms, but it's not as lopsided as you think. Of course, there are still 2 more out there TBD (Leinart and Bush).
