Theismann, who attended Notre Dame and was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy his senior year, was originally selected by the Miami Dolphins in the fourth round of the 1971 NFL Draft. But he bypassed the sun of South Florida for the snowy winters of Canada where he played for the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts. The Redskins obtained his rights from Miami in 1974 and that season, he began a streak of 163 consecutive games played for Washington.
