Gibbs to give up playcalling

The article on ESPN.com says that Gibbs wants to focus on personnel moves, such as what to do with Ramsey and LaVar.

Which is fine for the spring time, but come September those won't (or shouldn't) still be issues. So what then?

My guess is it will be as others have mentioned it's been in the past, and as other head coaches do it (such as Belichick and Weiss). Saunders will call the play calls and Gibbs will essentially give him full control, but he'll have the right to overturn a decision if he feels it's needed.

This is going to be great for us. Does this mean maybe Gibbs becomming our president/GM after his contract is up. Williams becomes head coach and saunders stay as Head coach offense?

Brunell was born 9/17/70

I think the difference between the two in terms of age, is that Brunell is starting to get football old (dont get me wrong, I still think he can get the job done), and Trent Green is just starting to get football old. Brunell has been a start in the leauge since 1995, and taken teams deep into the playoffs and really taken a toll on his body, where as Green really just became a every year in and year out starter in 2001.

That does make sense. Green spent a good amount of time on the bench - which probably made him the quarterback that he is today. Gee.....imagine that! A quarterback who spent time on the bench becomes a pro bowler!

i like the idea of someone else calling the plays for the simple reason that without having the responsibilty of managing a game,the co ordinator can be alot more aggresive in play calling.alot of times last year,if the defense was on the field alot the skins would run the ball just to give them a blow.

Can anyone confirm that Dan Henning called the plays back in the 80s? I've done a google search on this and have found nothing. I think I recall hearing John Riggins saying this on George Michael's show, but I'm looking for independent verification.

You're half right. Joey T. did call him the best, but he wasn't the coordinator during our record breaking season.

After I wrote it I thought about it and checked into it, he was out in 83' my bad. For some reason I thought Joey T. had gave Walton credit for that season but the old memory was a little off on that one.

Yes, I remember very clearly this being a very public fact that was especially talked about after Henning left the second time for a head coaching position (1987 I think). Henning had two stints with the Redskins as OC (in between HC gigs) and called plays most of that time.

I don't know why, but I was always under the impression that Gibbs was in complete control of the offense and has always called the plays from day one, back in 1981.

Because the current media acts like that. They are a generally clueless bunch that will repeat anything they hear. One guy on ESPN says Gibbs has always called the plays and suddenly it is the truth. Morons, all of them, morons.

You're soo right! I can't believe some of these people get paid good money to get so many facts wrong. My only knowledge of the Redskins comes from following the team for the last 15 years and yet I seem to know much more than the average sports guy on tv, radio or newspaper. They get facts about the Redskins wrong all the time. In this case it was a headline that was repeated by almost everyone ( including Comcast) that told the news.
