Playing a gig this weekend and want your opinion!

what do you guys hate to see/hear when you are watching a local band play? What do you want to see/hear? try to keep your answer genre free, more concerned about the performance and how the band conducts themselves on stage ... your ideas/comments will be greatly appreciated :headbange

i.e. tuning guitars during songs ...

The biggest thing a local band can do is show me that they're having fun and love what they're doing. I'll go see just about anything, but it's certainly more memorable if the band is really into what they're doing.

Other than that, local bands aren't usually professionals yet, so some minor slipups and such are expected. just don't dwell on them.

where you playing?

i agree with bdbohnzie. As long as your enjoying yourself and having fun, i don't care what you sound like. What kind of band are you, i'm generally into metal/industrial, along those lines. I like it when bands are loud, noisy, just generally crazy. If you just go up on stage, being all quiet, then play a song, then in between songs you barely say something, i wouldn't like that. You have to be pumping up the crowd. Do some stage diving, some fancy moves with the guitar, liven up the crowd.

try to get the sound guy to make you sound like you're not playing in a garbage can. Jump around if its not emo stuff. comign out to watch people act like statues is worthless. Make sure the person with the mic talks to the audience and has some personality. have fun.

I agree with the have fun suggestions. One of the best live local shows I went to was about 12 years ago. The band was taking a break but the keyboardist decided the break was too long and he was bored. He was talking to the crowd and playing bits and pieces of songs they were shouting out. Then he started playing Come Sail Away by Styx and had the whole crowd singing the song for him while the rest of the band were at the bar drinking. It was fun and different.

great advice fellas,

we are opening for a band tomorrow night at the "Laughing Lizard" in old town around 9. We are goinna get about 12 songs, we should take up about 1:15 of time.

I think being enthuastic and having a good vibe is real important, I'm sure the crowd will appreciate as well ...

Definetely have fun--it's not always easy when your opening for someone else's crowd, but if you guys are digging it, then the crowd will sense that.

This may sound a little off, but: don't play too loud, at least at the start. Let it build up, especially if your doing a full 12 song set.

And remember: when in doubt, drink beer.
