When the US army dropped sayid off they asked him in the truck if he had a wife or kids and the one guy looked at a picture of his daughter...was that kate? looked just like her. yeah it was kate's dad (remember, he's military from the flashback to his recruiting office). the symbols didn't seem to be more than chicken scratch, but i'm sure the fan sites are all over them.

I liked seeing the pastor from carnival do the cameo role of army guy . The cgi of the iraqi city/base thing looked terrible though, as did the greenscreen on the sayid drop off scene.
