I want to believe the following:

"There is absolutely no way the owners and the players union will allow this catastrophe to happen. They are just waiting until the last minute."

However, I have become convinced that someone with the power to stop the deal, doesn't want the deal. Either a group of owners (maybe the gang of 9, maybe not) or the union are determined to go over the cliff.
