and how does avoiding sacks ruin the offense exactly? I doubt we bootleg as much, it was boots where rolling out cuts the field in half, but those were playcalls, not his doing.

I'm not talking about planned bootlegs or scrambling to avoid sacks. A pocket passer stays in the pocket and goes through his reads. Brunell has never done that. He didn't do that with the Jags and hasn't done it here.

He sees the field better when he rolls left and he doesn't have a bunch of big guys blocking his vision. But there's a price to pay for that advantage and the price gets steeper as he gets older and his legs get weaker.

I disagree with that assessment. Brunell goes thru reads better than Ramsey or Campbell and only scrambled because he needed to. It bought more time for someone to get open, which didn't happen enough last season. Presumably with the new receivers, two or three targets can get separation is 3 seconds or less.

How would you know he does it better than Campbell who hasn't played?

I guess he's just a fast reader.

Does this mean that since Brunell is a scrambling QB and Saunders offense is geared towards pocket-passing that Saunders isn't going to be crafty enough or Brunell isn't going to spend more in practice throwing from the pocket?
There is a little bit of playful sarcasm there but not my intentions are not malicious. I just think the point of Brunell being just a scrambler is overemphasized. If there is a problem I'm sure Gibbs and Saunders have given it thought and talked with Brunell about their plans and whatever revisions are necessary.

1. 11-5 record.. I think they are clearly improved from last years 10 win team and coming in with a lot more confidence. I didn't feel they believed in Gibbs until the Rams game.

2. Make it to the NFC Championship game, no telling what happens then.

3. Portis will be the MVP, 1500+ yds, 12-15 TD

4. I predict top 8 in offense and defense but we will continue to struggle to cause turnovers.. Also we will be debating whether Eric Mangini gave Patrick Ramsey a fair shake for the Jets QB job.

On the extremeskins site, about 250 fans voted that Ramsey had not had a fair shake as a Redskin by a margin of almost exactly two to one.

Brunell starts because he has the experience to read defenses and make the right decision on the play. First and second year QBs get "played" by good NFL defenses. It didn't help Alex Smith to start in San Francisco as a rookie. The Niners would have won a few more games with Tim Rattay, even if Rattay has less talent than Smith. Young quarterbacks are almost always better off if they can get tutored and study film their first two or three seasons before they are regular starters.

This is NOT a knock on Campbell, just a comment on his experience. In another season, Patrick Ramsey is going to be a fine quarterback for someone.

I was talking about the "reads" that are designed into pass plays...going from one receiver to the next if the first isn't open.
