This Years Draft

obviously our draft (2,5,6,6,7,7 (late) and 6 (early)) is going to revolve around OL/DB/LB depth. We could afford competition at Punter (but don't need to waste a pick on it) and at WR #5 (also not that important). Even if we sign a linebacker, because it won't be a front line free agent, its very possible the 2nd round pick could be used on another LB to compete for the starting job. If we get one OL or DB guy, we could easily draft another in the second as well. (though if andre dyson is signed (a #2 quality CB), then we probably hold off on a DB till the later picks)

I don't think we're in the market for any sort of RB or FB, and if evans comes back, our DL starters and depth would be pretty well taken care of this year, so a late rounder may be used on a young guy, but not with our first selection.


On the #2 pick: If cromartie or J Joseph are available and dyson isn't signed, they'd be better picks than spencer, BUT the low end of the draft is seriously lacking in high talent OL and we might need an immediate starter. We have backup LBs and CBs that are somewhat passable if needed, but there's no one that can step in on the O line (if spencer is gone, davin joseph should be available... not as big, but very talented as well). While Spencer is bench warming, he can also help at DT/NT. he's got 35lbs on joe S.

6 - ILB Stephen Tulloch
6 - FS Reed Doughty
6 - OLB Anthony Trucks
7 - QB/P Ingle Martin - not only can he pass, he's also a better punter than Frost :P
7 - FS Harrison Smith
Und - WR Drouzon Quillen
Und - P Sam Koch
Und - ILB Jimmy Cottrell

WR #5 and Punt competition, I think martin is better than collins, so maybe (if he can't punt better than Frost) he could be put on the practice squad or conviently get an injury (like simon, melvin williams, and manny white before him) till next year when collins may not be needed anymore. OR replace him Will Montgomery (C), who's althletic, but is definately a project in need of a weight room. other LBs and safeties could be brought in, but they're clearly a class down from those taken a round or two earlier.

6th (panthers - for rod gardner)
7th (comp pick, for losing 2 FAs (smoot/pierce) and getting two much cheaper FAs (patten rabach) in the same year... the value difference should create a 7th round pick).

I wonder how much of a difference it would have been had Smoot and Pierce not missed a combined 8 games.

probably not a big difference (patten did end up on IR, missing 7 reg season and 2 post sseason games). The only REALLY important factor is number lost and number gained. Contract size and performance are secondary concerns.
