sonic in 3d just isn't that great in 3d, the engine has to pump out polygons for huge levels to allow for the speed sonic needs, and unlike in 2d, in 3d its VERY eassy to go slightly off of the intended route and (with the speed multiplying that error) end up way off from where you should be.
