Raiders sign QB George after long hiatus
ALAMEDA, Calif. (Aug. 28, 2006) -- The Oakland Raiders signed Jeff George to a contract, bringing back a player who hasn't thrown an NFL pass in five seasons.
George, the No. 1 overall pick by Indianapolis in 1990, joined the team in time for Aug. 28's afternoon practice. He previously played for the Raiders in 1997-98, starting 23 games and throwing 33 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
It is not immediately clear what his role will be on the Raiders, who already have Aaron Brooks, Andrew Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo on the roster.
George played with the Colts from 1990-93. He was in Atlanta from 1994-96, then spent two seasons with Oakland and one with Minnesota before joining the Redskins in 2000, first as a backup. He was signed by Seattle as insurance midway through the 2002 season, but didn't play. Chicago signed him late in the 2004 season, but he never played for the Bears either.
George, known for his strong arm and clashes with coaches, has a 46-78 career record as a starter and has never lasted longer than four years with any one of them.
George hasn't played since 2001, when he was cut after two games with the Redskins. In his last two games with Washington, George had a quarterback rating of 34.6, completing 23 of 42 passes with three interceptions.
In his next-to-last game with Washington, he and coach Marty Schottenheimer had an animated sideline discussion after George committed four turnovers and was removed from the game.
George also had a sideline argument with coach June Jones when he was with the Atlanta Falcons in 1996, and the team suspended him and then cut him.
George played well his first season in Oakland, throwing for 3,917 yards and 29 touchdowns in 1997. He struggled with injuries the following season, starting only seven games, and was replaced the following season by Rich Gannon, who was a better fit in coach Jon Gruden's West Coast offense.

In a move that could shake up the team's depth chart before the start of the season, the Tennessee Titans on Monday afternoon signed veteran free-agent quarterback Kerry Collins.
ESPN.com previously reported in the "Tip Sheet" last Friday that the Titans, who had a brief flirtation with Collins earlier in the offseason but backed off signing him at the time, had rekindled their interest, and that a few other teams were considering him as well. The Tennessean of Nashville reported Sunday night on its Web site that discussions between the Titans and Collins accelerated over the weekend.
Collins will challenge incumebent Billy Volek for the starting job, coach Jeff Fisher all but conceded, once he is able to assimilate the offense. Collins had indicated in the offseason, when there was much speculation about his future, that he would probably only resume his career if there was a team willing to provide him a chance for playing time.
At one point in the offseason, Collins considered retirement.
"Billy's got some competition," Fisher acknowledged Monday evening. "I've spoken with Billy. [He's] not too awfully pleased with it, but that's life in the NFL."
It is unusual for a team to bring in a potential starting quarterback so close to the start of the season, but the Tennessee offense has struggled under the stewardship of current starter Billy Volek, and it is obvious that first-round draft choice Vince Young is not ready yet to assume the No. 1 job. Volek has been a backup his entire six-year career, but moved to the top of the depth chart when the Titans traded Steve McNair to the Baltimore Ravens.
"This is a team that I feel I can contribute to and make an impact in," Collins said of the Titans. "I've had opportunities to go different places. This was the one that I've really been targeting. I'm just glad it worked out."
Ironically, the Ravens were a team that considered signing Collins before they acquired McNair, who has supplanted Kyle Boller as their starter.
Regarded as one of the NFL's top backup quarterbacks, Volek, 30, is 3-7 in 10 career starts. In his starts, the former Fresno State standout has four games of 250-plus passing yards and in 2004 posted consecutive 400-yard outings. But there have been rumors for much of training camp that Volek was struggling and that some members of the coaching staff were not sold on him as the starter.
"It's mine to lose, and even though we're not putting a lot of points on the board ... I feel comfortable with this," Volek said.
Tennessee is Collins' fifth different NFL team. He began his career as a first-round choice of the Carolina Panthers in 1995 and played three seasons there before he was released in 1998 after apprising the team that his heart was no longer in the game. In addition to the Panthers, he has played with New Orleans (1998), the New York Giants (1999-2003) and Oakland (2004-2005).
The former Penn State star led Carolina to an NFC championship game berth in 1996 and piloted the Giants to Super Bowl XXXV in 2000. He has appeared in 152 games, and started 145 of them, completing 2,826 of 5,082 passes for 33,637 yards, with 173 touchdown passes and 166 interceptions. Collins has thrown for over 3,000 yards in each of the last six seasons.
Collins is 66-79 record as a starter.
Both Collins and Volek agreed the competition will be good.
"It's going to make us a better team whoever comes out the other end of it," Collins said. "I know it's tough. I've been in the situation myself. We do have to be professional. I think we can work together."

Im fuckin baffled...Brooks is a better qb in oakland, And Collins Is not gonna beat out Vince Young...Just u watch..It will be a travesty if he does...If he does we should trade them todd for vince..

if collins doesnt beat out vince young he sucks...young is a rookie and if they have to put him in, they're screwed

and idk why the raiders got george...he probably wont even make the team, unless tuiasosopo is that bad

I find it hard to believe that the Raiders would hire George this late in the preseason just to cut him next week. I think he makes the team.
I also think that Kerry Collins starts for the Titans come week 1.

Jeff George totally surprises me. Didn't see that one coming at all. The Kerry situations where Collins didn't want to do any of the training camp, preseason stuff. I thought he might join the team later in the year, but not surprised that he signed with them.

Not that it will materialize but think about George in Minnesota that year. You don't need to think with the Freak. "Just chuck it up there Dog". I could see George with this stat line.... ESPN says that he is throwing well.

i am still in shock that jeff george is back in the nfl......isnt he older than brunnell? but the more i think about it i think about the season he had with moss in minnesota...does george still have the arm? thats the question. and as far as kerry collins...he is probably a better qb than volek but the franchise player is waiting in the wings...vince young. this is temporary solution until he is ready.
