He's better than any corner we could get in the 5th this year.

He played himself into a starting role with the Rams last year. The offer is $15 million for six years. I'd have to say this is another good move... insurance for when Smoot's contract expires?

We need Smoot back after next season, I think this would be insurance if Springs gets hurt, in my opinion.

Here's a slightly off the wall thought I had. I know Springs when healthy is a great man to man defender. However, I also know he hasn't been entirely healthy lately. So I'm wondering, could Springs play some FS (sort of like Rod Woodson and Jason Sehorn switched to FS) and Butler and Smoot play the corners?
I'm not saying this should be a permanent move made this year, but I wonder if a couple of years down the road this could be an option. Granted, this is assuming we don't draft Sean Taylor

Smootsmack, that could be a possibility, but I'm sure Springs is slated to play CB first.
Going after Butler simply means they're looking for depth. Bauman is fine as the nickel back, but we need at least one more defensive back in case he goes down, or Smoot or Springs get injured. Certainly don't want to be in the position to have to depend on Ade Jimoh. |

I agree this might be an insurance policy & smart policy at that. Say we did not make this trade, next off season we lose Smoots to FA..? We are starting all over again at the corner position.
Springs has 2-3 season left at best. Jerametrius Butler has already been through the NFL learning curve & is battle tested. Any 5th rd'er we aquire in the draft will need at least 2 seasons to be battle tested. I'm 50/50 on this deal...????

Springs is only two years older than Champ. He's only 28.
