Wasn't Howard a Super Bowl MVP? Not too bad for a guy who couldn't play.

I really wonder if he would have had more success in today's NFL with all the rules that favor WRs now. In the days when he played the bigger WRs were more in fashion because of the way corners could abuse the WRs.

Timmy Smith was almost one too and held the SB rushing record for a long time. Anyone can have a good day. You can't judge a whole career by one day or even one season.

Howard was a great return specialist though, he even led the league in returns if I remember right with the Packers. However, for the Redskins and as a wide receiver, he was a bust. Speed alone doesn't make a great WR. You can get away with it in returning though...Eddie Drummond is a current example.

I was so hyped about Howard when he came to us, just like I was for Shuler. We can't complain too much though ...we didn't draft Ryan Leaf. Look at his stats sometime, they're amazing...but NOT in a good way.

vincent DID play for jerry gray, who's been working with GW for an eternity now, so he shouldn't be completely lost.

marcus coleman would also be worth looking into, but he's not as good as troy.

My thoughts exactly. We're desperate at CB. Springs is back but can he STAY back? Rogers now has three screws and a cast; he'll play but how well? I don't expect any interceptions from him. We have NO depth at the position. Troy Vincent has had a good career. He's rested and healthy and should know the defense fairly well already, so he can step in.

I think it's a GREAT signing. He fills a hole that has been a big reason why we're losing games because of the defense. I do think we should work Ade Jimoh in somehow, even if as a nickel back or extra safety.

Curry Burns has a great name, but I don't want him covering Reggie Wayne this week.

Many say the Redskins made a mistake in drafting Desmond, and as it turned out you might say that was the case. However that decision was made in hindsight because there were twenty eight other teams lined up for his services after winning the HT at Michigan. No one at the time had any idea he would turn out the way he did, not even his 20/20 critics. He certainly was not bad as a kick returner, maybe B. Mitch was afraid he would eventually take his job.

Re: Redskins Sign Vincent (MERGED)

yeah, the important thing to remember is that he's taking curry burns spot. that means it's a huge roster upgrade, cause one guy that can't play is gone, and someone that could start has taken his place.

he can use him like prioleau, as a nickel CB and to replace arch on some passing downs.

Re: Redskins Sign Vincent (MERGED)

IF Vincent still has enough in the tank, I hope he sticks around next year. Clearly, Williams system operates on players who can be versatile. Vincent is converted CB now playing Safety. My guess is that he and Prileou are pretty comparable and having two such players would give GW more flexibilty in nickle and dime packages. Although not entirely shocked, I was unpleasantly surprised at just how much we have lost w/o Prileou around.

My biggest concern is that we need a clear No. 1 corner. After sitting out for so long, will Springs be able to perform again this year at the level he did last year? Probably not. And, looking forward to next year - we will need to obtain a true no. 1 corner (clement?) and someone who can consistently pressure the QB w/o the need to blitz.

Here ends my statement of the obvious.

Re: Redskins Sign Vincent (MERGED)

what I want to start seeing from the Redskins are INT's and FF.....no matter who gets the job done! If Troy can pull one his first start then I say he's a keeper!

Re: Redskins Sign Vincent (MERGED)

Darrell Green was a 20 Year DB, look how great he was even in his thirties.
There shouldn't be any dought for Troy Vincent, he's a phenominal player.

Re: Redskins Sign Vincent (MERGED)

we need to fill our roster from spots #23-53 (our depth sucks).

we probably could take on clements kind of contract (averaging over 7mill a year), but down the road it'd send us flying over the cap without some big changes (BUT wynn will probably be a cheap resigning instead of 4mill a year, brunell can redo his contract or get cut, etc).

I think that this will make a big difference on third downs. I think the plan all along was to replace Arch with Prioleau on most third and longs. Arch just isn't a third down Safety in this system yet. When he gets more comforatble, I think he will be better in coverage. This should fix that critical problem.

The next thing that needs to get fixed is Macintosh needs to start seeing the field. Holdman just does not excel at the outside LB role. A combo of the two of them, so that they are both fresh all the time, could help fix that.

Back to Vincent, great pickup in my opinion.
