the 4 deals are 3-4 year deals with 3-4 year options, more or less. the base pay is close to 1mill per (+pro rated signing bonus), and then balloon up to 4mill per year (+pro rated bonus) the last few years.

so it'll be cheaper to keep them through at least 2008, even though they can't play. but yeah, it definately hurts when you miss on players with big money. none of them were first tier free agents (except maybe El who was on the borderline due to a weak WR free agent AND draft class), but they all got first tier money.

4 first tier DEs (bosch, kampman, abraham, and freeney) were available, but three signed with their original teams, and abraham was traded for a 1st (too much for a guy that only cares about his pay checks and love to make excuses to miss games).

a guy like darren howard would have been better (and MUCH MUCH) cheaper than carter. oh well. maybe we'll get it right next year.
