Interesting take by Mort on QB change

Strange as it may sound, it may have taken the Cowboys to spur change with the Redskins.
For Joe Gibbs to finally go with Jason Campbell at quarterback, one has to assume he has seen Cowboys coach Bill Parcells re-energize himself and his team since he benched veteran quarterback Drew Bledsoe and turned to Tony Romo.

The Cowboys are 2-1 on the road since the change and Romo played not only well, but good enough to win in all three starts.

Gibbs also saw how well the Chargers have done with Philip Rivers in his first year as a starter. And it certainly didn't hurt Campbell's cause when a true rookie, Vince Young, led the Titans to a win over the Redskins a few weeks ago.

So don't look at this as Gibbs throwing in the towel for the season. He's too competitive for that, even at 3-6 with the road game against the Buccaneers up next.

Gibbs is trying to salvage the season. It's desperation time. And, yes, the side benefit is that Campbell gets experience for next season or the Redskins will have a better idea on whether they need to go get someone else to play quarterback beyond 2006.

Re: Interesting take by Mort on QB change

I'm sure the success of other young QBs around the league played a part in Gibbs' thinking, but overall I'm hoping the main reason is that Gibbs thinks Campbell can bring a spark to the offense that was lacking under Brunell.

If Campbell goes 2-1 in his first 3 starts.....I would be happy with that.

Re: Interesting take by Mort on QB change

Mort's comments make a lot of sense. I don't understand why so many people consider replacing an aging veteran with a younger and usually more talented quarterback, a give up move. Campbell can do a lot of things that Brunell can't do anymore. Brunell obviously has the experience edge, but that hasn't helped him all that much in the wins department.

There is no way anyone can consider the move to JC a give up. The give up move would have been to stay with MB. MB was 3-6 and the team was going nowhere, switching to JC shows the coaches still want to try to win this season.

The move to Campbell along with Portis going on IR says to me that they know they're done. If the defense wasn't so bad, it would be different. Teams that have defenses like ours (very bad) , don't turn things around, as a rule.

Well sort of. The move shows they want to win...eventually. Seems to me it's a move to get JC ready to be our starting QB of the future. Winning games with him this year is a delicious bonus.

If Campbell shows some glimps of going down field, I would still be content if we lose.

If anything I saw from my limited views of Campbell is that he throws a PERFECT fifteen yard out. He completed that pass numerous times in preseason. It's like the the perfect ball for him.

What's a 15 yard pass?

Excellent point. My thinking early in the season was that we should put Campbell in now, take a hit in the short term, for long term gain. However, I think that Campbell gives us a better chance to win now too.

Re: Interesting take by Mort on QB change

The report from Redskin Park today was that Campbell was throwing the ball very well, even in the rain. Randle El seemed very excited when asked how he thought Jason looked during practice. Perhaps our recievers will be more excited about running their routes with a QB that can get them the ball.

How would you like to be reciever on our team whose name is not Moss, or Cooley with an incentive laden contract, and one of the incentives is based on your number of catches?
