If Brunell retires are there any cap implications such as dead money to worry about?

it's the same as if he were cut... which would mean 2.3mill more in cap space next year (vs staying on the roster).

he's still a decent backup, but it's tempting to let him go and use the money elsewhere, since he's vastly overpaid (as a backup).
