5 Bright Spots for the Redskins This Year

It seems like the number 5 is in everything I write lately.

Here goes:

Derrick Frost: He's been very steady for most of the season and has quieted his critics by rebounding from his pre-season and early season struggles. Hopefully, he'll finish strong and enter next season as one of the up and coming punters in the NFL.

Kedric Golston: Not only has he had an impact in his rookie season, but he's a team guy, and he's starting to look like a steal in the sixth round. Who knows, a few years from now we may be saying how did this guy slip down so far in the draft?

Ladell Betts: Betts' play and attitude has been admirable in Portis' absence. Provided we get a healthy Clinton Portis back next year, this should prove to be a very good tandem, especially if we get back to true gritty Joe Gibbs football. I would love nothing more than to see Betts go over 1,000 yds for the season. He derserves it.

Jason Campbell: Only if we had started him earlier. Although Jason Campbell hasn't exactly shot the lights out in his first three starts, we can see that he is clearly the future of this franchise. Everything pivots on Campbell's developement. All things being equal, this kid should only get better.

Rock Cartwright: He's found a way time and time again to make an impact on this team. Last year he proved to be a solid back-up at running back, filling in a critical times down the stretch. This year he's been a special teams demon on both sides of the ball. Rock has surprisingly given the Redskins a bona-fide kick-off return man.

These five guys have just stuck out in mind for some reason. I think from top to bottom, these are definitely true Redskins.

This might be a little pre-mature, and alot of you will probaboly think i'm only basing it on one game but I was pretty impressed from what we got from Troy Vincent. I hope we keep him around because I think he could be solid for another year when we try to groom someone to play next to Taylor (or maybe Preliou will come back strong, but from ACL surgery I have my doubts).

I agee with you on Troy. The only thing with him, though, is he's not a long term solution.

I love Campbell, but of that list Golston is the biggest surprise. Add Montgomery to that & we may have our future DTs set for years to come.

other then the blocked kick, what has vincent done around here? on the pass that owens dropped, vincent got burnt. too old, and too injured. what the heck happened to doughty? can he play in this league? no one knows. why draft these guys if they are going to rot on the bench?

On that one turnover..Doughty looked super slow. I was like, is this a replay of this guy running or what.

I think another bright spot this year is the play of James Thrash. Thrash may not be a superstar or big play threat, but he always seems to make impact plays here and there. He's caught some third and long passes for first downs, and usually makes plays on special teams as well. I like him because you never hear him speak and he's not really a go to guy, but he plays within himself and helps out where he can. I hope the Skins decide to keep him around because I think he's the type of hard working, good character guy that the skins need.

I would have to include Vernon Fox onto your list. Since Archuletta is a bust and Vincent has missed some time due to injury, Fox has done a nice job filling in at strong safety and has an opportunity of nailing down that position for next year.

You know I thought about Fox - for a split second.

These five have been consistent all season long or made some game changing plays. Fox on the other hand, has sorta stood in for Vincent while injured. Not to take anything away from his contribution though.

Golston has been a real find. Hopefully Montgomery can also develop, he seemed a little lost earlier in the year when he and Golston both started.

Anytime your punter is included anywhere on a list of top 5 bright spots you know your in trouble.

I've been most impressed w/ Golston. He seems like the real deal. I'm having a hard time w/ anyone else on the d b/c they've been so bad.

Betts, has been very good, but we've kindof known he is a pretty good backup.

Rock has done a better than expected job, and seems to have created a niche for himself.

Fox may have not been consistent all year, but he has in my view been a pleasant surprise. I know he has done well on special teams, but I didn't know he could field his position pretty well and there is some potential for improvement. I also noticed that because he was handling his side of the field, Sean Taylor started making more plays. I'm still puzzled as to what the Skins are going to do with Adam Archuletta. It would be too big of a salary cap hit to just let him go. They have to find a way to get some production out of him.

It looks more and more like we're going to bite the bullet on Archuletta....and letta him go.

I think Fox will further assert himself next year.

12thMan should hang his head in shame for not spelling "Redskins" correctly in the thread title

Or was that your subtle way of saying the Redskins have no "D"?
