'Skins need to act on him soon.
Franchise tag? Maybe?

i doubt it. i think tagging him would mean he gets a 1 year deal where we pay him the average of the top 5 guards in the league's salary. knowing the deal hutchinson got in minnesota, im sure the average is quite high and he isnt worth THAT much IMO

I think the tag would be a very reasonable option with DD. We have to avoid putting any more big contract stuff into the 2008 and 2009 seasons, and the franchise tag would allow us to load about 5-6 million of our cap space into this year to have dock on board without having to make a commitment to him for the 2008 season and beyond.

good point but im not sure if we can really handle 5-6 million for next year when we need a lot of upgrades on defense. if we could do that and still get the required defensive upgrades i would be all for ithe could be had at probably a 3 mil per year deal i would estimate if we were to actually sign him. hutchinson is getting 7 mil per year i think

Re: Cap Room

What about placing the transition tag on Dockery instead of the franchise tag? We may not get 2 first rounders if he signs elsewhere but at least it gives the Skins the match if other offers come in. I believe the transition tag requires the following - I would assume Dockery is worth this:
  • A transition player has received a minimum offer of the average of the top 10 salaries of last season at the player's position or 120 percent of the player's previous year's salary, whichever is greater.
  • A transition player designation gives the club a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to the player by another club after his contract expires. If the club matches, it retains the player. If it does not match, it receives no compensation. Transition players can be signed from March 3 through July 22.

Crazy Canuck keeps this information here on the Warpath and keeps it in a much more user-friendly format (in my opinion). If anyone is so inclined, you can actually copy Canuck's tables to excel and do some number crunching on your own (which I've done). He last updated on the 19th of December, so the link you provided is more updated. But check back on Canuck's figures here when he updates. The information is easier to handle.
That other site you mentioned is PCinOZ's cap site. I've never loved the format but his info is second to none, especially concerning signing bonus details, etc.

I'm gonna do another update in the next day or two.

Ahh yeah the dude I recently banned due to the fact he was spamming us and trying to get around our 10 post minimum to post new threads. Good info but the guy needs a lesson in forum etiquette.

Agreed. Which Warpath member(s) is responsible for giving etiquette lessons? PWNED?

How come the cap penalty for cutting Archuleta on the CPND sheet is only $4 million, but it's $9 million on here. His says that the second bonus is an option bonus and yours says it is a signing bonus. Which one is right?

Re: Cap Room

I found an article about Archuleta's contract and it basically says that the cap sheets here are right. But it also said this:
Quote:
Also, if they did release him at any point, there are "offset" clauses built into his contract that would allow for some cap credits for the Skins. Like, say he is cut in 2008 as this last scenario explained, and then gets a $1 million signing bonus someplace else. That amount would be offset from the total cap hit the Skins would take.
So would we get back whatever signing bonus the next team gives him?

If what JLC says is correct than I would assume the Redskins would get whatever next team gives in bonus could be used to offset the cap hit - although I doubt it would be anywhere near the bonus he is still to count against the Skins. I guess if you are another team and needed a punt team captain that would be worth the vet minimum - so maybe we are talking about a $50,000 bonus or whatever the average vet minimum contracts gets these days.

that's apparently a special clause in his contract, and not a general rule (or used very often, from what i've seen). the average vet bonus is still 40k i believe. after that point, you'd have to count the full value towards the cap instead of the vet min number (410k? or is it 450k now?).

Re: Cap Room

In terms of tagging Dockery - I think he would get the O-Line amount. In
2006 the franchise tag for an O Lineman was 6.99 Mil. I think that the categories are set in the CBA and that, in 2006, there was not a separate category for guards. Unless the new CBA alters the categories, I think that franchising a tackle costs the same as franchising a guard. (For some reason, I thought they had separated out left tackles, but I could be wrong).

These numbers are from Ask The Commish.com - The Cost of Applying the Franchise Tag in 2006 and were for 2006:
Quarterback $8.8 million
Defensive End $8,332,000
Linebacker $7,169,000
Offensive Line $6.99 million
Wide Receiver $6,172,000
Running Back $6,085,000
Cornerback $5.9 million
Defensive Tackle $5,656,000
Safety $4.1 million
Tight End $3,327,000
Kicker/Punter $2.5 million

We could also transition tag him for considerably less, but the problem with that is someone for sure would put some sort of offer in since there is no penalty, and then you have to match it. Plus you get into poison pills and whatnot.

Yeah I'll agree with that. Restructuring should be done in moderation. The only time it makes total sense to just go for broke and kick all of the cap hits into the future is when you really think this is our year to win it all.

But I don't think we're at that point (LOL). We should restructure to give us enough space to bring in the good young talent we need. But we shouldn't go on a crazy shopping spree.

Ideally, we'd have more draft picks and build our talent pool that way, but that'd make too much sense!
