Re: Not tailgating at Super Bowl
Tickets are going to cost thousands of dollars. There will be events all around the city and stadium. I don't think any of the patrons are grilling franks to save a buck.

Re: Not tailgating at Super Bowl
the article says that there is NO LAW that prohibits tailgating outside the stadium. if the police tangle with someone over this issue, come super bowl Sunday, i see a law suit waiting to happen

Re: Not tailgating at Super Bowl
tailgating is almost just as much a tradition as the game itself.

Re: Not tailgating at Super Bowl
I don't know if people usually tailgate before SuperBowls, but this is really stupid.
What is the basis?

Re: Not tailgating at Super Bowl
The motive behind this has to be money. I'm not sure how, but it has to be.
If the NFL is in agreement with this, then shame on them. If not, then they should overrule the dolphins' decision, or bar them from hosting a Superbowl ever again. What's next, no standing at your seat? -- er, nevermind.

Re: Not tailgating at Super Bowl
I dont really think tailgating is about saving money. Personally, if you couldnt tailgate before a football game, it would suck 95% of the fun out of it for me. Tailgaiting is the best part of the trip, just throwin the ball around, throwing back a few beers and hanging out with a bunch of other fans. Thats just me.

Re: Not tailgating at Super Bowl
The NFL has not allowed tailgating at the Super Bowl site ever since 9/11. This isn't new this year. Of course, one of the Super Bowl sites since 2001 was Detroit and so there wasn't a whole lot of demand for that kind of activity at that venue in February.
Actually, I'm told by several attorneys that there are laws in Miami that relate to crowd control during large public events - such as parades, demonstrations, 4th of July celebrations and the like - that will easily accommodate the police and the NFL from keeping prospective tailgaters away from a defined and designated and publicized area around the stadium. The Super Bowl game itself is not for the fans; it's for the corporate partners and sponsors. Each of the participating teams only got about 13,000 tickets and - at least for the Bears - more than 9,000 of them went to players and friends of the owners and team sponsors. Only about 4000 season ticket holders got tix. And don't think that this is just the Bears, Danny Boy will do the same when/if he ever has the Skins in a Super Bowl game. If you think I'm wrong, the Redskins got an allocation of just under 1000 tickets for the game. How many of those went to season ticket holders who aren't also team sponsors? My guess is you won't have to take off your shoes to count that high. The NFL really does understand its audience better than any other sports entity. The vast majority of the core football fans will be attending Super Bowl parties or they'll be in Vegas at the sportsbooks. They won't be anywhere near the game site itself. And so the NFL creates an atomsphere for the people who will be at the game site and tailgating isn't part of their "expectations". The Super Bowl game is about TV ratings and ad revenue for the game itself and for the games coming up next season.

Re: Not tailgating at Super Bowl
Yeah, it's really something that's often overlooked, the fact that very few "fans" go to the Super Bowl. It's more like a "business meeting" That's one of the biggest reasons why it's so difficult to have an outdoor Super Bowl in a cold city. Maybe the hardcore fans don't mind watching a game out in the cold, but the VP of Marketing for Home Depot and his family might. And they're more important in this case.

Re: Not tailgating at Super Bowl
This reminds me of where I go to school...We're only allowed to tailgate in this little 100 by 100 yard spot and the police start writing tickets for public drinking the second the game starts...makes me really hate watching football here

I know I'm a little late, but I have to say it's good to have you back sportscurmudgeon. You and GTripp always have such nice long (but not wordy), informative, and articulate posts.

Sheriff:
Nice to be back. Thanx for the kind words. And let me say, it has always been my policy to stay on the right side of the law and the lawmen.
