yeah, we need springs to be the #1, cause rogers and smoot probably can't handle it.

but seriously, smoot played with a broken sternum... a BROKEN STERNUM! throwing up during half times cause of the pain, then coming back out and playing well. He had a couple bad years in minnesota, but very little of that got back here, because when he was here, he played hard, even when we were losing.

I like Smoot fine and admire his playing hurt, but, realistically, I don't expect him to be an answer to our burning questions. He'll be adequate and add depth but doesn't alleviate our need for a first rate CB. We still need a first rate cb, a good offensive tackle, and a five star DE or DT to get to the playoffs. Further, we have to acquire the above without giving up a good player.

I don't think he is that bad, but he isn't amazing. Give Rogers a year or two and I think he could be a solid #2 receiver.

Didn't Carlos have a hand injury last year (and came back after 1 game) - if so, wouldn't this help account for the drops of INTs (much like TO's drops at WR).

I admit that I haven't seen Smoot play much the last two years. Who wants to watch Minnesota playing in that shitty dome? However, his play here was fine. The reason he was a fan favorite is that he played well, and with tremendous courage. I agree that sometimes fans like a player so much they can't see it when he starts to suck (cough Lavar) and Smoot may have gone downhill fast, but I didn't see it two years ago. He is still relatively young and if he is injury free, I expect good things.

Because mostly all of us agree that it was a good move to get Smoot back, and was a bad move to ever get rid of him in the first place.

Here is another pro Smoot comment: He was also apart of the 2004 defense that was so damn good. He's just one player, but in my mind, a very good one that was ripe for the picking. Good job F.O.!!!!!!

Fred Smoot is a fan favorite, his play for the Redskins MADE him the fan favorite and he earnt the adulation he gets from us. The chants of "Smooooooooot" are due to this, not because he has a cool name!
Same with Cooley, if he plays like Christian Fauria we don't scream "Cooooley", simple as.
Getting Smoot here definitely upgrades our CB depth, MUCH rather have Smoot out there than Wright/Rumph - anyone who thinks otherwise had better step away from the crackpipe!
If Smoot was so good we would be done CB shopping? I didn't realise he could morph into more than 1 person - did you see a game last year, our CB play (and depth) was terrible, Smoot is just the first part of an upgrade (or overhaul) - with better corners we might just cover WRs long enough to allow our D-line to get to the QB this year.
We're bringing in a guy that already knows the staff, players, system, location, owner - a guy that will have no problems settling in.
Loud mouth penalty machine - I'll agree with you on the 1st (but not about Fred Smoot) :-p
Why is no-one else critisizing the move? A rhetorical question if you ask me.
Go watch some Skins games from back in Smoots early days and you should remember what we all do.

Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....

While I do not agree with chrisl4064's extreme view, I do agree that some folks have a short memory about Smoot's play.
It seems the big Smoot fans only remember the good and not the bad. Unless Smoot finally found his way to the weight room he is 175 pounds soaking wet and with sand in his pockets. While Smoot likes to hit, he will lose against big RB's or Te's.
I still remember the awful game Smoot had as a Redskin in St. Louis against Torry Holt . Torry Holt had a career game and made Smoot look terrible. I was not saddened to see Smoot leave because like recently departed Dockery, Smoot is not worth the contract Vikings signed him for. We were smart not to match and the Vikings found this out the hard way and cut him. WHile Gibbs is putting a good spin on the story of Smoot leaving and now coming back, Smoot is a good CB, not great. He will be a great #3 cb, but not a great #2 or #1. Improvement over last years #3 CB? Yes.

Smoot is a classic #2 - the game you mentioned has him matched one-on-one with Torry Holt. Torry Holt is one of the best receivers in the league statistically, so he's going to beat a #2 every time. Smoot was ill-prepared for a feature role, and it showed. He still had a good enough year to earn a payday from another team, so we lost him.

This team doesn't need him to be a star, but in his career he's been able to shime in smaller roles. It was a good pickup at a good price for us.

Then he proceeded to play so below expectation that the Vikings cut him. He is not coming back a hero. He went to a team that was supposed to be a few players away from a Super Bowl and what happened? He is not coming back on a good note.
I think Smoot is more of a classic #3 corner, not #2. IMO Smoot would have problems with a team like the Colts that have a strong #2 WR.

I couldn't agree with anything you said. Smoot will sure up our secondary and gives us another option, if Springs is not on the team. The vikings were a couple of players short of the super bowl? I've said this before, but Smoot was on our team in 2004 when our defense was top 5 in the NFL. This guy brings heart and skills to his position. We just need a defensive line that can put pressure and force turnovers. I'm sure that we can all agree on that last statement.
