Our D line does need to be addressed, which it will, just later in the draft. The draft is deep enough we can get a quality player. There may be something in the works we do not know about yet. I can't believe the number of people that are all for signing aged up LB or OLINE men, but when a 26 year old beast LB comes available for essentially nothing, people are bashing it. Yes it will cost us, yes Rocky will sit, but that is just a move that can't be ignored. That side of our D was consistantly run all over.
Please don't try to convince me that "keeping a first rounder" means a whole hell of a lot. We're dropping from 6 to 31 in this scenario, I don't care what you're calling it. Would it be much different if we dropped from 6 to 33 (the second round)???

Saying we're keeping a 1st rounder with the 31st pick is technically true. But it doesn't mean a hell of a lot. Going from 6 to 31 means we're giving up a ton of opportunity.

rocky has not even had the chance to show it on the field. let the guy develop instead of giving up on him so damn early in his career. remember we gave up a 2nd rounder just to move up and pick the guy. at least give him the chance to show it on the field, give the guy a full training camp at least. jeez, what is it w/ our coaching staff that is so damn afraid to play young players when everyone else in the nfl does it???

for now...I'm going to assume that once we acquire Briggs...we're going to trade him to move back up and pick up a second or third rounder...but just adding Briggs with no extra picks is retarded when you consider our current linebacker core. This stinks of a desperation move in the wake of Washington's injury...kind of like the Duckett trade

Just because a guy is labeled a franchise player, is he automatically worth 2 first round picks? That's what the CBA says a franchise player is worth in a trade, but that doesn't mean teams are willing to pay that.

If Lance Briggs didn't have the franchise tag, would you give this year's first rounder and next year's first rounder for him? I'd hope not. The reason? He's not worth that much, no matter what tag he has on him!

We're not coming out ahead of anything. We'd get a really good LB and a pick that can't possibly land us an impact DT. We don't need 1 good LB. We need an impact DT, a young G to groom (don't forget, we're currently planning on forcing a career-long T who is built like a T to switch to G), an athletic S to play alongside Taylor, and some would say a young DE because we're getting old at that spot.

This trade does not fit our needs, it doesn't solve our problems, and it perpetuates the players' discontent with our front office's willingness to pay outside talent rather than pay to keep their own. We need to trade the 6th pick for more picks, not Lance Briggs and a pick that can't solve our biggest need: DT.
To play devil's advocate for a second-

I like Justin Harrell as a prospect. And there's an outside chance that Alan Branch could still be around at 31. So if we could land a prospect whom we were considering at 6, and now only have to pay him No. 31 money, we'd actually come out great in this deal.

But then again, if Harrell and Branch get taken prior to 31, and we don't have an option but to take the best remaining DL prospect, then the Briggs deal has officially royaly screwed us.

If we are genuinely interested in this deal, I could only assume it was because we weren't enamored with ANY of the top prospects.

Doesn't matter what we think about the top defensive line prospects, guys. If we didn't like the guys at the top, we could trade our #6 down for more picks. We could pull a deal with Denver for their 21st pick, and get a 2nd and a 4th or something. We don't have to squander the trade value of the 6th pick for Lance Briggs.

Again, it's not about what we're getting. It's about what opportunities we're giving up here.

There is no rationalizing why this deal makes sense. Please, people stop being homers for a second and stretching yourselves to come to the defense of the great Joe Gibbs. We need a DT to stop the run (how quickly we forget Tiki gashing us in week 17). We need athleticism at safety alongside Taylor (Fox was OK, but at the end of the season, was the secondary at the level you really want it?). We need a Guard with a big body (do you trust a 6'8" Todd Wade to get low enough to clear the way for Portis around the goalline when we sorely need a TD?).

We don't need one mother effing linebacker, for God's sakes. Do you really think we're THAT good right now? That Briggs will come in and take us to the next level? We need multiple athletes. I don't want to say we're in rebuilding mode, but we're definitely still BUILDING.

The truth is the FO went for it all last season and fail big time. Trading most our picks in 07 and one in 08. There just is little chance we can make it up in one year or with one pick[6th]. It would be hard to do it trading down and the likeyhood of hitting on lets say three good players in a trade down of three picks is not good. So what is the best way to go? That is why you have a Great GM to plan away to go and not this live for today way of thinking!

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?

Here's another take:
The 6th Pick and Archuletta for Briggs, a late first rounder, a sixth and cap relief.

In many ways, I think the proposed trade - value wise - is about even. I honestly don't know much about Briggs - Is he a system LB (Warrick Holdman/Roosevelt Colvin)? OR Is he a game changer in any system (Wilber Marshall)?

Again, I am not in favor of the trade BUT, if Briggs is the real deal, then I don't think we are taking it up the butt either.

No - franchise players are rarely worth two-first rounders, that is why, when they are traded, it is usually negotiated down. But, and I may be wrong, rarely has a franchise player been traded w/out it costing at least one number one and something else. I haven't analyzed the history of the franchise player trades/signings - but I am pretty sure this would be one where the offering team keeps a first round draft pick.

That said, it all depends on whether or not Briggs is the real deal. If so, we get a guarranteed playmaker and a shot at a solid player in the draft.

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?

Another thought - after last season, GWilliams said he was going to really analyze the defense and tear things apart if he had too. He also has made comments that indicate the base cover 2 may be vunerable and in need of revamping.

Perhaps Williams has a plan to revamp the defense to account for certain systemic deficiencies. (Wow - there's a concept, "'Skins Have A Plan" , talk about your odd concepts).

I don't like this trade at all. Briggs' capability and talent aside, when is this organization going to learn you can't import chemistry? That's the thing that has shot us in the foot year after year. We've never been short on talent, but always short on hunger, chemistry, and leadership.

If we pull this deal the Redskins will look good on paper yet again, but fail to produce on the field.

I can see it now, five games into the season and Briggs and Fletcher are still 'learning the system'.

We need to run like hell from Rosenhaus and his ink pen!

Briggs and Fletcher are still learning how to knock somebody in the mouth? Think they know how to do that already dude.

Any rookie we draft at # 6 won't need to learn our system or will come in with instant chemistry??

Man please, this is the same sh*t we were talking about last year.
In fact, every year. I'm weary with this team bringing in the 'missing piece.'

Same damn discussion, different dress.

You may have been talking like that about AA not me.

Briggs is the real deal.

# 6 pick knows our system and has instant chemistry? What's the answer.

One more thing. Do we really think we'll just add another three new faces to this defense and we've solved our ills? I don't buy it.

Why in the hell did we draft Rocky...please save me the maybe he's a bust speech. Appearantly, the guy that was coaching him was a bust!

Fletcher already knows the system so we can check that one off the list. Briggs is a concern though. He's a good player, no doubt, but how much has he benefited from playing with Urlacher? Would he even be a good fit for this D?
